Where do I start? Lots to tell and lots of questions to ask. I recently acquired these 3 complete axes and a complete pick-mattock seen in the pictures below.
In Addition, I found a True-Temper Flint Edge Kelly Works axe head without handle during a major cleaning session at my wifes grandparents Barn.
They are all in various states or wear/rust, however none of them show major sings of pitting and deterioration. Luckily the Kelly was kept inside under a work bench and is in the best shape. The rest of the axes I could not distinguish any markings.
This is where the experts hopefully come in. Lets start with the Kelly since it is the easiest to Identify. Pics below show scale and the head itself weighs 3-4 lb.
I would like to know:
1. Patter/style of this axe head
2. Estimated year/range this head was manufactured
3. Proper handle length & style (straight, dog leg, etc.)
4. Proper handle finish.
The harder ones I would just like to know as much information as anyone can provide for each of them.
All of the handles are in various conditions. Since I will be restoring these to use as working axes I will most likely replace all of the handles so know they will not crack or break in the future.
I will be doing the initial cleaning using vinegar. I have read that this is the best way to eat away the rust and grime without damaging the metal while still keeping its patina. Once I get the heads cleaned up I will be reposting with any pictures of markings I can find to further the hunt for information.
Thank,
Kyle
