Barong owners: Help with a blade retention question.

Just received this one in a trade and man I do like the style and ergos, fits my paws perfectly.

I did read a review before I got it over in the pass around thread where a gentleman said the detent was quite strong and that the blade was hard to open (not sure of his exact words). This sounded perfect since I like a liner lock to have a strong detent, much like the Mili.

Well my question is this. Does your Barong`s locking liner side seat flush with the blades tang as to seat the ball detent in the blade all the way for good retention?

Reason I ask, is mine just grabs by a hair, barely holding the blade in the closed position. ( I added a pic of the best angle I could get) In the pic you can see the liner barley moves off the G10, and this is in the fully closed position. I can actually swing the blade open with my wrist.

These days I have more fun using knives, rather than collecting, so I just want to be safe with this feller in my pocket.

Thank you for any insight,
Dave

My Kreined Barong doesn't have a super strong detent, but not once in the time I've had it (a couple months of EDC now) have I had any issues with accidental openings. Thumb pressure sends the blade open real easy, but even riding in my back pocket with a chance for the blade to easily swing free it hasn't budged out of the handle. It is a great knife, even better with a Krein grind and thumb ramp, as well!

I handled one in my local store the other day and it did not have this issue. the detent was actually pretty firm.

If it bothers you that much, you could contact your favorite mod person to tweak the liner and perhaps tap the ball detent a bit further out...

I've found on the one Barong and Khukuri I handled, as well as the multiple Lums I've owned/handled, that the detent tends to be fairly weak on the overseas liner-locks (including a fair number of Japanese/Taiwan/China-made framelocks by other companies). Only by screwing the pivot down to the point the blade isn't centered have I found a level of retention that is acceptable. I have NOT found this issue with the Military models in general (don't think I've handled any other Golden, CO liner-locks).

P.S. If you don't like it, trade it to me ;). I'm due for a Krein-ed Spydie.

When I mention the detent isn't super strong on my Barong I should qualify that with the fact I am very used to Spyderco's lock backs, and any liner lock has a weak detent compared to those. Still, my Barong hasn't had one issue with the blade self opening even when carried all day without the rear of a pocket holding it in the handle, so I am very happy with the detent on mine.

Thank you much for info guys. I`m a lock back fan from way back, but I`m not comparing the detent to my G10 E4. Its apples and oranges. But My LUM amd Military set flush on the blade closed, both have good detent pressure and carry safe and well.

The problem is not with the amount of BB as you can see plenty of it, but it just doesn`t seat down. I`m guessn one could file down the blade tang where it contacts the stand off spacer to allow it close more and maybe seat the bearing in better. I`m not qualified to do so, so I won`t attempt that.

From the sounds of it, you guys all have pretty good detents on yours, so should I send it to Spyderco for a look?

Honestly gunmike1, if you carried this guy in your back pocket with no help of a pocket seam to rest on, the 1st couple of steps you took, it would open (ouchie, lol).

Still, I like the design and feel of this knife, it may be the 1st one I ever buy a backup for.

Thanks for the help guys,
Dave

hey gunmike1, can you post a picture of your kreined barong? i'm interested in what the thumb ramp looks like.

Update: I sent in the Barong, with the mandatory 5 bucks, and the kind folks at Spyderco were nice enough to go through their inventory of Barongs and grab me one with better retention.

So, I received a nice new Barong that I`m confident in carrying and using and even got my 5 bucks back.

Thank you Charlynn (spelling?)

I don't have access to my computer for a while (I'm at Disneyland on the iPhone), but go to Spyderco.com's forums and you can search outa thread that Tom Krein started with tons on Barong regrind pics.

I have the same problem with my millie. The detent does not sit in the blade at all when closed. Its a millie I got in a trade. I think the reason might be because it was a different black s30v blade put orange g10. Is there any way to fix this?
