i see that the barong and khukuri are discontinued as of 2010. im not particularly fond of either design, but their handle construction has to be my favorite of any spyderco ive come across. if you havent seen it check out nutnfancys video on youtube (10:20):

a liner lock with thin g10 scales accompanied by thick, squared-off liners. plus it sports those sweet little steel pillars. anyone else enamored by this construction?

I'd prefer a nested LL like the Mili for strength but I like the looks of that one.

I absolutely love this design as well as the Khukri, I just know they will become very sought after in the future.

You have to see them in person before you can appreciate them. They are very well made and the blades seem extra sharp. (even for a Spyderco)

I love if Spyderco brought the large Schempp Persian back. I had mine stolen(along with other items...) from my car. :(

I love my Kreined Barong. Tom Krein reground it to make the cutting edge .010" and brough the cutting edge back behind the Spyderhole (there is still a useable choil). He also added in a thumb ramp and spine swedge to make the blade look a lot like the original full sized Calypso. Pair Tom's work with Ed Schemp's already excellent design and it makes for one of my favorite EDC's. I truly think the Barong's are the best work that Tom Krein has ever done on regrinds.

you definitely have to send me a picture of that

I've posted pics of it before, I'll have to try to get them back up so you can see it. Actually, and Spyderco.com's forum if you do a search Tom Krein had a great post where he had nice pics of a few Barongs that he reground. He takes an very good knife and makes just plain great, pretty much like a liner lock Calypso with just great slicing ability. I think my Kreined Barong is by far my best food presp folder, with it's 4" blade and .010" thick edge on a 3mm thick blade it makes a Millie seem like a fat knife. As most know the Millie is actually excellent for food prep, but since the Barong is so much thinner it real is a superior cutter.

I also had my Barong Kreined a lot because of gunmikes pics. I feel Tom

turned a great knife into a much much better more useable knife.

Thanx again tom.....craig.

I have the Spyderco large Persian and I think it's a very nice knife although I would think the handle might be a bit short for people with big hands, my hands are medium sized and I wouldn,t want the handle to be any smaller.
In any case Spyderco's habit of discontinuing knives is frustrating. I certainly can't afford to buy every model I like at the same time. I missed out on the large Manix because I was waiting to buy it when I thought I could afford it. In fact there are currently more discontinued Spydercos I'd like to buy than models that are actually available.
Spyderco also always seems to drop a large version in favour of a small one. For example the large Fred Perrin bowie is no more although the small kitchen knife looking Perrin "bowie" is available at a hefty price. I think my Spyderco fixed blade Kumo is a much more attractive knife but... yup,it's discontiued. I'll stop here although I could list a lot of other sad examples.

Spyderco has to stay in business. What would happen to them if they just had the same knives in the line year after year? People would have them and not buy hardly anymore. (how many old time knife companies are gone now that did just that?) So they drop them add new and keep us interested and also keep the collectors happy. (like me I'm never more interested in a model as when it's dropped) I'm glad they continue to bring out new and drop old. Keeping them all and adding on the new is apparently not an option for Spyderco.

If they stop selling, they get discontinued. It really is as simple as that. As great as they are it happens.

The Barong will definitelly be a great collector's piece in a few years. I've got one, and it's a fantastic knife.
I'd recommend anybody to get it. Fit and finish are just custom like.

I handled one a few months back at Plaza Cutlery. Only for a minute though.
The fit and finish was superb, along with a smooth action and tight lockup.
