Do any of you know any place online or elsewhere that I could get a good barong that would be good for a live blade as well as look nice. I know of kris cutlery but wanted to see if anyone know of a place that sold better ones. Any help would be great.

Well it sounds like youre looking for a blade that will be used so Kris Cutlery is about the only real place that sells one of decent quality. Atlanta cutlery as well as Visayan Legacy both sell some. I cant speak for the Viasayan Legacy barongs, but the ones Atlanta Cutlery sells are of questionable quality. The one I have is much too hard for any real usage, and the handle has become loose after only two swings. Antique barongs are of much better quality, but to get them is more difficult. Muslim items are somewhat scarce to find and well can go for much higher prices than KCs. Also there is the danger of possibly damaging a costly antique if youre seeking to use it. However I must state the antique barongs I do own are of very high quality and would take a good beating but you know what I mean when I say there is always a danger of damaging one. And well with antiques its much harder to replace as more costly.

Your best bet is to get one made by a knife maker, I own a number of Barongs, bolos, and kris, but if I'm going to use them I make them. And make them on demand for people who are interested, it is the way to go, if it will be used.

Liveblade is right- the only way to obtain a top notch Filipino blade is to have it made by someone who really knows what they're doing. Its not cheap, but definitely worth it.

There are several excellent tactical knifemakers out there, some of whom make fantastic FMA style blades. I have a few(and more on the way) Filipino style fighters, bowies, and swords that Jerry Hossom made for me and they have performed beautifully. Some examples of his tactical blades can be found at www.hossom.com/gallery/ . He's just now working on a new bolo prototype that promises to be awesome.

T.H. Rinaldi designed the first Tempest for me a couple of years ago. It is also a terrific knife for FMA style bladework. His website is @ www.pe.net/~thrblade/ .

Matt Lamey @ www.lameyknives.com forges some fantastic fighters for the money.

These are just three that immediately come to mind.

Liveblade, I didn't realize that you were a knifemaker as well as a fighter- that's very exciting news. I'd be very interested to hear more about the blades you make. Do you forge or use stock removal? What steels do you use? Who does your heat treatment? Do you have pics of any of your work that you might post for us to see?

I've been making blades for about 20 years. I will do both stock removal and forging. I do my own heat treating and differential tempering. I use many different steels although O2 works for me for small blades. I'll use tool steels that are stronger for larger blades. I've made many blades from files. And I am going to make a batch of SS Kerambits, for a group of Navy SEALs that I train. This will be the first SS blades I've ever made besides testing.

you can also try jun antolin's www.reflectionsofasia.com he does shows aroung northern california, but when he's out he's out you will have to wait until he goes home again. but he always gets different kinds of swords. i have a couple.

oh and i forgot, you might have to send him email because he doesnt have everything on the website, because he has a store in his house, he will only have two or three of these, and four or five of those. email him and he can tell you what he's got.

Liveblade,

Thanks for the info. I'd love to see examples of some of your work. Next time you make a blade, please post some pics for us here or on the Custom Knife Forum.
