Aside from Kris Cutlery who I'm told makes a good barong what other companys or makers make affordable(under $200) and usable barongs. I saw one at http://www.valiantco.com/philippines.html that looks good and is only US$85 for the plain model and US127 for damascus. Any word on their quality as a live steel/practice weapon? Any other makers I should look into? I want a semi authentic looking one also rather then a neo/tactical hybrid looking thing(kydex sheath, rubberish grip, black coated blade ex..) Sorry if this has been asked a houndred times before and thanks for any help you can give.

Unfortunately Kris is the only production company turning out Barongs that I know about. Perhaps others will chime in here...

Cold Steel was making one and had it in their fall catalog IIRC, but according to a thread in the Blade Discussion forum they did not turn out well and the entire run was sold to Ron Balicki who sells them only as display pieces. His site is http://www.ronbalicki.com/welcome1.htm

Kris Cutlery is the only company selling Filipino blades I have experience with, but their blades are very good for the money.

Keep an eye out on Ebay, and get a real one. I got these two Barongs for under $200 on Ebay. Just gotta be patient.

Also order a Sandata catalog, if Cecil is getting rid of real ones they will be in there. No guarantees on prices or availability, but he does know Tausugs in Sulu, and does occaisionally get new ones made there (traditional ones not the production ones in the normal kris cutlery line). Anyways, the difference between a real one, and a production is light and day. And for the same money...
