Just got my first benchmade folder! For a great deal too. Brand new for 119 out the door. How are these knives? Been looking at some reviews and would like to know some more info from some of you that have this knife already.

Usually people do their research and polling for opinions before they make a purchase, not after? ;)

Just messing. I like the Barrage, I've been on the hunt for a mini for a couple weeks now.

Great choice!

The 581/586 Barrages are very under-appreciated, $200 for a M390 blade and bolstered G10 handles is a great value IMO.

The thin blades slice well and the M390 stays sharp about forever.

It seemed like a great deal so I jumped on it without much research as it was only $119. but I agree that even $200 is a fair price considering the steel used.

$120 is not a great deal. It's an incredible deal for the 581! M390 in a high grind, G10 scales with bolsters, full liners... yeah, you did great on that one.

The blade geometry is very thin, which means it cuts well and is easy to sharpen. It also has a nice point for detail work. I de-assisted mine; and it works fine as a manual, although it's not as smooth as the best of the other Benchmades I have with the axis lock.

You caught yours at a great price. I bought mine for $195 at a local brick and mortar store. I liked it immediately because of the blade geometry and the M390 steel.

What are some great sharpening systems that you guys would recommend?

How much do you want to spend?

You can get a Spyderco Sharpmaker for $60-100, it should work great with your Benchmade (BM does a pretty good job with even factory bevels).

Honestly, you can get buy for a long time with a leather strop with some Bark River black and green compound. Your M390 blade shouldn't need a complete sharpening for a while, especially if you strop it occasionally and don't let the edge get too beat up.

I was thinking about getting the lasky system and make it into a convex knife sharpener as well.

I played with my friends Barrage 581 and i was impressed. This baby is on my list. Well Blade steel on the 581 is Bohler M390. This is a powdered steel, and is one of the most advanced blade steel that Bohler makes. This blade can really retain an edge. It’s also a high Chromium steel so you have excellent corrosion resistance and that is very important to me.

My 580-1102 came in M390 and I really liked it. Problem was the blade was warped out of the box, but the deal was made sweeter by sending it up to Benchmade for a blade replacement and what came back was the same knife with a 581 blade. I love this knife!

I just have the 580 with 154cm. It's been my EDC for the past two years. Love that knife.

581 is one of my favorites

I had the 585, lost it, now have the 586 and 581. One for week, one for weekends! :) Love'em both! I'm one of the few "numbnuts" who actually love the assisted feature too. When I really need a one-handed knife-it's THERE with authority!

I had the 580. I thought it was chintzy feeling. When the 581 arrived I was extremely impressed. Great knife and deal.
