Hi,

Is their anyone here familiar with the work of Barry Davis? I discovered his folders in Weyer's books, and I really like them. There's a web page on the ABS site here:

http://www.americanbladesmith.com/davis/

Is he a JS? I thought he was a stock removal only maker. Could anyone tell me anything about his work?

Thanks,

JD

Barry Davis is one of the nicest people you could meet. I'll post his
address later if no one else does.

He is from up state NY and holds an MS stamp. His work will remind you
of James Schmidt. Barry uses top shelf materials and makes his own Damascus.

One will eventually find its way to me.

It's a crime, but I've never met Barry. He lives about 20 miles away from me. I'll have to give him a call sometime.

I've got one of his pearl folders.I see him every year at the N.Y. shows. When I bought the knife about 6 yrs.ago he was training Ken Phiffer(? spelling).Barrys a hell of a nice guy.

On my way home from the OCKA show last yr. I stopped by Northwest Knives and Collectibles in Salem. I was able to fondle a Barry Davis Wharncliffe gunstock-whittler which was a copy of an old Sheffied pattern. It was without a doubt the finest custom I have ever seen. Maker damascus, carved bolsters, and filework that was breath-taking. It had genuine gold foil backed tortoise shell handles (where do you get that?) and each blade had it's own lock. I'm still trying to figure out how to come up with the $4500 asking price, which I actually believe is reasonable. There is a picture of the same knife with checkered gold-lip pearl handles in the Oct. 2002 issue of Blade magazine, pg. 117. It list Mr. Davis' phone# as 518-477-5036. The guy's work is amazing.
P.S. Joss, his email link is on the Davis website link you provided.

If anyone is interested there is a Davis folder for sale on ebay. I'd post the link but wasn't sure if it was appropiate. Just do a search to find it.
