For some reason I couldn't access the forums for about a week, so I have been unable to write up a report on the little guy. With NROTC orientation starting at 0700 tomorrow (freshmen arrive at 0800, and are in our hands until 1030 Friday), I havent had much time at all with the planning and getting ready that has been going on to do too much testing. I spent about an hour clearing weeds in front of one of the horse pastures, it (not surprisingly) excelled at that, especially taking a liking to large (6+ ft) thistles. As for chopping, it is a surprisingly efficient chopper for its small size and weight. Haven't taken it to the scales yet, but my guess is that it should weigh in at around a pound, it feels like a little baby in my hand compared to my 18 inch AK (which I hope to dwarf at some point with a 25 inch AK). It bit quite well into pine, taking out nice chunks and going through limbs of around an inch with relative ease. Another high point were small trees of an inch diameter or less, the upper limit it sometimes struggling with, but really flying through the smaller scraggly ones which the AK seems to more or less bruise up (probably due to my **limited** sharpening skills). I will write up a better report and do more testing during regular college orientation week after we wrap up on Friday. My friend Kyle has the other, which was a bit heavier and slightly longer (maybe an eigth of an inch), which was made by Sher. He has used it with great success on his upstate ny farm to clear out trails and brush on those that are overgrown. The one I kept is by Shankar. Sorry for the shoddy report Uncle Bill, but I figured I would at least get this much in now and get the detailed on out later.

Great field report. Sher and Shanker are two of my favorite kamis. Sher definitely tends to make large, heavy blades. My BAS by Sher has a spine that is about as thick as the spine on my 25" AK:eek: .

My Sher BAS is out on a field exercise with one of my troops as we speak. Should have a detailed account by this time next week. It's definitely a beefy blade; thicker/heavier than my "!" BAS.

Good on you:D I ran into some 4th Infantry buddies over in Kuwait who told me their chain of command wouldn't let 'em carry their khuks. They didn't present the "right image", oh my aching.......

I was talking to my Gunny about khuks before i got the AK, and when i brought it in he asked me, "you trying to compensate for something there warrior?" apparently the ones he had seen out in the fleet and with BN Recon (LAVs) were around 12 inches and a helluva lot lighter. I have to admit, after handling the BAS i would be much more tempted to take that with me into the field than 34 oz 18 inch AK (Although the blued blade is awfully nice).

Tommy, are you with the Tropic Lightning? There's a young man to whom I gave an 18" AK stationed with them. I was a newbie at the time (still am compared to the pros here)not having handled a variety of khuks. Thinking back on it, I should have advised him to take a lighter blade. Something along the lines of my Shanker BAS maybe. Funny though, when he chose the AK I couldn't make myself say, "No, take the BAS."

Yep, I'm with the Tropic Lightning. They're pretty good about letting us carry whatever we think we need, within reason. As long as we're not too...ostentatious about it, a Khuk'll be as acceptable as those crappy B.Q. machetes that a lot of the guys carry.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for that AK!

Tommy, if you see the AK, be sure that they're keeping the blade oiled. That AK was the seond khuk I got from HI and it's a beauty. Take care.
