Got a new BAS today from an earlier listing...

People may remember I wasn't terribly fond of the first one I had (from the 9/18 blems). I referred to it as soulless. Munk replied that soulless was a bit extreme and that typically soulless was something along the lines of a pre-made sandwich that comes from a vending machine.

I was thinking of that other BAS as I was writing this and I realized that the guy who has the other BAS, and whose eyes lit up the first time he saw and held it, buys those pre-made hamburgers and corn dogs by the case from warehouse stores... So I guess there is a bit of wisdom in that. :D And there is a khukuri for everyone or a person for every khukuri (depending on who you think is in charge).

This BAS however, did everything short of jump into my arms and say, "I love you!" when I opened it. It's just one of those things. It specs out a couple ounces heavier, but there is such a complete difference in it...

See?

BAS is a great khukuri in overall size, weight & general usability... as long as the handle fits your hand OK. Can be smallish. Frog rig can be a little bulkier.

Love mine by Sher. It was the first mirror-polish khuk I absolutely destroyed. First one I could get sharp and keep that way. Not a huge chopper, but patience pays. Small whacks with a sharp'un will get it done eventually.

Some bad mouth the BAS. It really is a great all arounder. Yours is pretty too. For now. :D

Satin finish, dings & scratches make it look even better.

Congrats.

OK guys what is a BAS? Can anyone list the abbreviations you all use so I can print out a chart or something. I spend to much time at work looking these up and also there are specials that I can't find on the site.

Andy

PS. Beautiful knife!!!

BAS = British Army Service(s). If you look at the HI site, you will eventually, get used to the names of most of the more common ones. However, lately the DODs have had a wide range of names, many of which I've never seen and it can be hard to figure out which is which. You just need to keep coming back and soaking it all int.

The specials are listed here on this forum.

I have a 15 inch 17 ounce B:A:S: .
My first Kukuuri , won,t be my last Kukuuri . Don,t try and take my B:A:S:
Best knife I,ve ever owned . By far ! The only disapointment I have concerning it is it doesn,t need to be sharpened yet ! I,ve been wacking everything from thorn wood . (hard as Hell) to poplar and whatever wood needs to be cleared away . I don,t want to give it a torture test . I just don,t like to do that to a knife . I know eventually the gloves are going to come off and I,m going to give that knife a beating . I have to wait until I,m ready also . I don,t equate a soul and my knife in the same way some oldtime cowboys didn,t name their horses . They didn,t want to name something they might have to eat .

Like you said maybe that first B:A:S: wasn,t for you . I,m going to have mine for a very long time .
