Ive been using my BAS quite a bit and its a helluva knife. Ive stopped chopping tests as my arm is too stiff. Ive been doing some cutting and slicing tests, put it this way if a ghurka waved his khuk at me and told me he was going to slice me in half I would believe the man !! I was polishing my blade as it had some sap stains, I was using a cloth folded about 4 times and wiped the length of the blade - the edge went right through the cloth and nearly half way through my finger. I wasnt apllying much pressure-ow. Everyting I have tried to cut has been a one slice affair and its actually pretty pathetic. I wish I was back home so I could test it for real as and when I need to in a serious situation. Getting quite attached.
Bura, thank you for making me such a wonderful blade. I have another BAS in the post, made by Pala, its a gift for my father-in-law (soon to be) and he doesnt even know that much about Khuks but spends a lot of time in the bush back home in SA so Im sure he is going develop a serious case of HIKV. Any way happy head hunting campers !!

At least the edge didn't fail when it encountered your finger.

Even though his name is Kami Pala can't make a khukuri -- only handles.

The first thing I read about khukris was in Soldier of Fortune last year.. they spoke of a few "well documented instances" from world war two where gorkas dispatched sentries.. splitting them from skull to sturnum. In half? Not quite, but it gets the job done. Perhaps this is why I picked a WWII 18" as my first khuk.

Your comments about cutting and slicing just gave me an idea;took my BAS and sliced some cheese with it.It did that job as well as it handled chopping the fallen limb this morning. Thanks for the idea.

Funny you mentioned that I was showing my mate my BAS and I dropped the blade onto a block of cheese and it went through like butter. I prefer the more difficult tests like bone, Im thinking how it will fare against a carcuss !!

Do Not Wipe The Edge Area Of Any Knife With Any Part Of Your Body. Not even if covered. If you feel the need to run your finger along the edge area of a knife, invest in a chainmail glove. A good knife will slice through just about anything else effortlessly, leather included.

That said, get well soon.

Once of the more nasty cuts I've gotten in 15 years of playing with these knives happened like this. I was cleaning some kardas and chakmas. I pressed sides, back and edge of the chakmas to clean them -- not the same procedure for kardas for obvious reasons.

Not paying close attention which will get you in trouble at every opportunity I picked up a karda thinking it was a chakma and that tells the story.
