Base for DMT hone

A few months ago I picked up an 8" DMT double-sided hone (red/green), after using the 6" bench stones for a couple of decades. (My BIL now has the bench stones). The 8" came with DMT's "exceptional" Non-Skid Mat, which I found to be unexceptional, being basically a piece of thin, semi-tacky plastic that didn't do much to hold the hone in place at all. So I stuck four sticky plastic dots -- the kind you see on cupboard doors -- on each corner, which really don't get used too much, at least the way I sharpen. That seemed to do the trick; I still get 99% of the usable hone surface, and the dots keep the hone from sliding around. Cost, about $1.60 (Canadian) and I still have 8 or 10 dots left.

Or you can lay two strips of PTFE tape across a surface and position your plate atop crosswise. Say $1.40 (including CA sales tax) for a 260-inch roll. Two three-inch strips will cost you three cents.

Good suggestion. I'll have to try that. The dots are handy though if you are taking the hone to various areas: workshop, kitchen, etc.

I use the generic sub $20 I think sharpening stone holder you can get on a variety of big auction or river sites. Works good and I use for my waterstones as well. Can adjust for length and tighten up to stone. Rubber as well so wont slide.

or just put the diamond plate on another sharpening stone, maybe with wet paper towel in between. Is rock solid that way.
