Baseball practice in hot weather

It was a nice, warm, 102° yesterday, and my son's coach insisted on 2 hours of baseball practice at 6pm. Am I the only one that thinks practice should have either been scheduled for the morning or not at all? I'm coaching a team of 10U and informed the team that I wouldn't hold practice if it was over 95°. I believe it's just too dangerous for the kids.

Just an update for anyone curious. 5 players quit the team after Tuesday's practice. Graham is seriously considering it. The only problem is that it's not little league, it's USSSA, which means teams sign up, not players. There is usually one team made up of kids not already on teams, and this is it. If he doesn't play on this team, he won't play. I can't say that I really enjoy the coaches attitude, either. He ran the same boring drill for an hour last night and all the kids looked bored. There's no better way to get a kid to play soccer than to make them bored with baseball.

That's a stupid risk .Either early morning or late in evening when it's cooler .I you have lights you could do it after dark. Too many kids and adults have died for the sake of mandatory practice .

I'm a usssa coach for little league and would never consider having practice in the heat like that, especially since this is a tournament or allstar team playing in the ' off season ' so to speak.. Unfortunately hes probably more concerned with winning then the kids comfort level, adn you're right this is suppose to be fun, exciting and experience to keep the kids involved.. worse thing a coach can do is lose a kids attention at practice, and the heat just killed it all the more....

I bet you were like, is this ever going to end??

I wasn't there, my wife was. After 1½ hours she took our son and left. My lack of patience would have had me leaving after maybe 30 minutes. I think it's compounded by the fact that most kids today have lived their entire lives in air conditioning and don't know what it's like to go a summer without it(5 miles both ways, I know).
