The Bashpati by Rajkumar arrived today and its even more stunning in person. Thank you again Auntie of a terrific deal and a prize for my growing collection. The balance is unbelievable its 21in and 25oz of sexy steel. The fuller work is gorgeous as is the handle. The bone has pinks, reds, even some violet and blue going on. I'm at work and only got a chance to unbox it when I went home for lunch. I will take a bunch of pictures tonight for everyone and post them tomorrow.

This is a real gem IMHO, I love it and cant stop thinking about it lol. I only have a couple hours left in work until I can go home and play with it again lol. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning, I'm glad I still get this excited about things at my age.

I have a question and maybe someone here could answer for me. What is the difference between a Sirupati and a Bashpati? Is it just the quality of materials or is it something different? Any info would me much appreciated.

Mainly the blade shape. The bashpati is more "leaf shaped".

I have noticed that the Bashpati seems to be done in bone, and has sometimes more brass.

Glad you like it, I love my 18", 19oz Bashpati by Rajkumar too.

Congrats on snagging one of the last remaining khuks made by Rajkumar.

In case gb or anyone else is wondering about the maintenance of bone handles, here's information from a previous thread, which advises regular soaking or rubdowns in mineral oil (with a caution about the potential for darkening the bone):

FWIW, this site says that stag/bone/ivory knife handles should get regular rubdowns or soakings in mineral oil. If there is shrinkage noticed, then at least 24 hours submerged in mineral oil, at least every three months.

Bash pati means bamboo leaf in Nepal.

Siru pati means some other kind of leaf, can't remember which right now.

They are just named after the leaf shapes, nothing to do with quality of materials.

After playing around with google translate, I think Phil's correct about bashpati referring to a bamboo leaf, and sirupati could refer to the end or tip of a leaf.

Don't take my word for it, though.

Siru is a kind of grass in nepal if I remember correctly, and the shape of the sirupati follows directly from it.

I actually have a blade by Rajkumar that is what I call a siru-bash. I'll see about posting a photo f it later beside a siru by Tirtha and a Bash by Rajkumar.

I would love to see a picture if you have time. Thanks for the info guys, you cleared it up for me. I already coated the bone in mineral oil and it soaked for a couple hours. The bone looked to be in great shape, I think auntie might of had this on display or in her collection. It's very graceful and feels very lively in the hand. It changes direction freaky fast for such a long blade. The handle is nice and long for my big ole hands. I took a bunch of pics and will post them in the morning. I also hit the handle of my neem wood KLVUK. The is some cool color chane going on and great veining. I used 600 then1000 followed by 1500. Pics on the way!

Thank you for the kind words, gurkha berserrka

Thank you bawanna!

That top one is my field khukuri, for whenever I go out and need a good large blade.

The middle one which is kindof a Sirubash fusion is my kata blade. I don't know what kind of soul Rajkumar put into it.. But it is undoubtedly the most lively blade I have the privelidge of owning.

And the bottom was the first I ever owned and began this. That one is my bedside bashpati.
