Hey Guys,

I have a Hog MUK and I really like it, but that new infi is speaking to me...

So, since the two knives are fairly similar in use do you think it would be a disservice to the MUK to give it some competition with a Basic 4?

AND, if you could only have one, which would it be?

The 4, because it is not up-swept and would work better for more task's than just skinning.

I am selling my Muck and going Basic 4. I think the wardog handle lends itself better to hard use than the Muck Handle. Both are sweet blades though. I think the war dog handle with the muck blade would be the perfect medium to small knife.

I like the MUK for skinning, turns out its been good in the kitchen, can still be used for camp chores, just looks different than the rest of the knives. The Basic 4 will be a classic but I think it will be more in competition with the CABS than the MUK. The MUK is in a league of its own. By the way, I have a CABS and MUKs and think they're all great.

Have both and use them for the individual tasks that each excells at. That aside, if I could only have one, it would be the B4

+1 I couldn't have said it any better. No way I'm selling my Muk. I'll still probably buy a Basic 4, maybe one of each.

I love my MUK, but it is fairly specific in use for me. It will not be going anywhere. I just wish the Mini MUK would be released. I really like the looks of the B4 and would definitely buy one if things were a little different for me right now. Absolutely 2 different knives and intended use by my estimation though. If you can, have both.

+2, I couldn't have said it any better. No way I'm selling my Muk. I'll still buy a Basic 4, and I am getting one of each. To top it of I'm not a big fan of Res-C handles but this blade I think is going to override the handle material dislikes...

I have been on a quest since day one to find the perfect skinner to replace my old knives, most of which were folder's and a few fixed blades. I have tried several and while some were pretty good, I still have not found the perfect one. I find, when time is short, I seem to grab my old Camillus BSA which has seen many a deer and hog. The basic 4 is close in length, the handle look's perfect, should be light and fast, thin and super sharp. It has all the features that make for a great skinner and slicer. It will take a review of the two together to declare a true winner. For now, the B-4 get's the nod from me however, if you have both, you are surely good to go and can only get better especially, if the Mini Muk is made.

One observation I had while looking at the B4: it seems to me that with the choil/ricasso/tapering handle, your hand is going to be relatively far away from the working edge... I'm having a hard time picturing it as an effective skinner... Looks like it'd do a bang-up job as a camp knife, tho...

Mike,
I don't see it that way. My only worry would be length of the handle. I have large hands and the only knife I have with the RES-C is the 511, and find the handle small/awkward compared to blade length. I am sure the average person's hand would find it a good fit. If the B4 handle fill's my hand, I envision excellent control over the blade with the shape and taper. Some of the knives I have tried for skinning , have to much handle, I don't think it's going to be a issue with the B4.

I could be off-base with my observations. I think I'm having kind of a hard time just picturing the scale of this one... I'd love to see some in-hand shots with the B4, in various grips...

Do we know for sure if this is the -same- handle as the War Dog, or just -similar-?

I think the MUK will remain the better skinner, the handle I believe Jerry said on a previous thread was even designed with skinning in mind. I think the B4 will be a better all around knife for camp chores, cooking and even can be used for skinning. I think both can be used for all those things, but the MUK will excel at skinning and the B4 shape will have more utility for slicing. I'll try to find the thread when Jerry described the MUK handle

For use as a skinner I'm planning on taking a thin one and enlarging the choil from the existing choil through the talon hole thus eliminating it. I'm thinking this with allow a nice choked up grip for finer work. But still not change the length of the working edge much. It may not be worth a darn but I think it would work.
