Hello,

Does anyone know how tapered the tang is in the basic 4s? I was wanting to replace the res handle with some wooden ones but if its terribly thin under there it wouldn't be worth it. Thanks for the help!

Tapered? I don't believe they are tapered.

(Now, do I want to dig the SAR4s out of the safe? Naaa. Sorry 'bout that player1219. The Scotch might get in the way. :D)

Sorry 'bout the "tappered" confusion player1219.

I was thinking of the width tapering towards the butt. No the over-all reduction of height to the tang.

As for a handle, you would need to miter out a pocket for the tang along the length of the handle material. Basically a bore down the length of the wood scale. I don't think the tang alone would be tall enough for a handle.

An outstanding example of a mortice tang fitted on a busse kin is a camp tramp t1mpani had done
years ago. I'll look for a link.

Yes, it's seven years old, but the pictures are still there and I'm not going to take any better pictures than Gregg took. The Howler in that thread was given to me by Ian, and done by a local maker (in Australia) while Jay Maines did the rehandle of the Tramp, though by the time these pictures were taken I'd smoothed things up a bit and changed some contours. Overall, I still love it---these days I'm extremely comfortable doing that kind of work myself and wouldn't bother sending it off to anyone. I'd also probably move a little farther out than just doing exactly the same profile as a regular tramp handle (except for the integral guard which was Brend-inspired) as the whole, wonderful point of hidden tangs is that the handle can be ANY shape. :)

Basic 4 and all basics have res-c handles so unless you have a set of them x-ray vision goggles you will never know;):D

unless you tap the tube fastener and pull it off.

Its a hidden tang:)

Lord have mercy brother. I just opened the link above. Those are a couple of the nicest mods ive ever seen. You still have em? Please post new pics:cool:

Sure I have 'em...though the Tramp gets used/abused and the Howler gets kept safe and clean as it was a gift (it has skinned a couple animals, of course, I'm just very careful with it). I think the Tramp got freshly re-blued last time I put it away, but it's been awhile as I've been giving a lot of time to a couple favorite customs on outdoor excursions. They're in the safe, I'll dig 'em out tomorrow.
