Well I have decided on taking the INFI plunge. My local knife dealer has what I believe is a Busse Basic 5 (although it might be a 7) in the shop for $129 w/ leather sheath. I ask, since I am new to Busse knives, is this a good price? It seems unused, taken on trade, but who's to know?
I would like to get an Assault Shaker also, but I have so many knives on order now...

PS: No, I'm not going to give up my 1095 knives!

SB,

I don't know if that's a good price, but it sounds pretty good to me. As for your 1095 knives, that's the great thing about collecting knives, it's ok to like many different steels and knives for different reasons. Doesn't have to be just one!

Bits, that's a better price than the last couple I've seen at gun and knife shows.

Hell, there's one on eBay now that posted in at $150, and still has almost a week to go.

Any idea what those retailed at new?

IIRC, I paid $159 or $169 for a Basic 5 from 1sks when the Basics were in production.
That's a great price.

Thanks everyone for their replies! I'm going to pick it up tomorrow!

:) :) :D

If it's a 5 or 7 it is a great price, especially with the leather sheath. :D:D

Let us know what you think when you get it. :D:D

If you can beat everyone to the shop tomorrow, Congrats!:D

That sounds like a great price SharpBits, let us know what you think once you've had a chance to use it:cool:

Ok, first the details... I was wrong about the sheath, it's the kydex, which is fine by me. Less maintenance that way. I was confused as I was looking at several knives at the time.
It is the Basic 5, which is good, as it's a much more useful size for me. The condition appears to be unused, but possibly carried, as there is a lot of kydex rubbing on the blade. Coating is in excellent condition as is the handle. No box or paperwork.:(
I haven't had a lot of time to give it a try, but I did test it on the bag it came in. I was able to do a push cut on a thin brown paper bag as though this were a paring knife! Whoa! The only other thing I tried so far was a cardboard test. I tried swinging at a box as though it were a small branch and the knife went through it like butter. So far, I'm impressed. Hopefully I will get a chance for a longer, harder period of use. All I can say now is :) :) :D :D :D Way to go Busse!

-SB (Yes, it has drawn blood. I accidently bumped my knuckle against the blade. Small cut like a new razor blade! Isn't this a 5" combat blade made out of thick stock?;) )

Sharpbits,

Congrats on picking up that B5 at a killer price!! You done good. (Yeah, I'm jealous. ;)) I suspect the Basic will impress you more and more as you continue to use it.

Hey Eric - just curious - what's so great about the leather sheath?

I bought a basic 9 on a discount sale (for $100!) about a year ago with a leather sheath. Is that rare or something? It is a nice sheath by the way.

Nice find.

The leather sheaths were from the 1st generation of the Basics. They evolved to Kydex, then the later nylon w/kydex insert.

Normally, the leather-sheathed blades will have the smooth coat finish, while later blades will have the "crinkle" finish.

Thanks for the info thatmguy! My basic 9 does have the smooth coating instead of the crinkle coat. Well I guess you could say it used to have the smooth coat... It's a user, so the coating is mostly gone.

Actually I believe it was Kydex then leather then the nylon/kydex.... the first ones with the kydex had smooth blades as well as the leather or at least the early leather ones...

Antdog,
Sorry for the delay in answering. Yes, I believe the leather sheaths are a little more rare, but that is just the impression I've got from seeing the sales on the forums. You more often see kydex sheaths with the Basics.

Great find BTW on the B9 :D:D
