I received a basic 7 proto from the extravaganza and it is only ground on one side is this the norm?

Not real sharp. The point is very sharp. The belly is the dullest part then the rest of the lenght is ok.
I have ran it over a ceramic stick and it appears that it will sharpen up ok with a little bit of work.

sounds like it has the asymmetrical edge, needs a little sharpening and it will be ok. can you get a closer pic of the "non sharpened" edge?

Guess this is why it's a prototype :p Probably from when they were experimenting with different edge profiles.

I'll get a closer pic of the unground side as soon as the battery charges in the digital camera. It is coated and flat from the edge to the spine on the unground side.

I certainly would, those basics are some of the best users in infi(even if it's modified) ever. Since it's sorta irreplacable though I wouldn't go around using it to jack up a car by the trailer hitch or something.

Here is a close up of the unsharpened side.

And I do believe that I will be using it. This knife just begs to be used. Probably just use it camping to chop wood and various other outside chores.

Personally I would never use a Proto do to potential collectors value. You do see the B7's come up for sale all the time fairly cheap though.

are there any signs what so ever that the side in question was sharpened?

an asymmetrical edge (like a lawnmower or tractor blade) has a much larger grind on one side and a very small grind on the other. a chisel grind has no grind on one side.

i think you have a standard busse asymmetrical edge on your 7.

no big deal, use it, and when you get it sharpened put what ever you choose on it.

if you can't sharpen knives then no sweat, there are pros in every town who do that for a living.

You sharpened it?

It was most likely a blade that was made for photo sessions, not use.

If you want a user, buy a user. If you sharpened it, too late, you have most likely removed any collector value.

It is also possible that it was not heat treated.

The blade is sharpened on one side. As far as me sharpening it; I just ran it lightly over a ceramic stick on the ground already sharpened side.

How could I tell if it was or was not heat treated?

I want a user not a collecter.

Call and ask Jerry? I have some other ideas, like running a file over the edge to see if it bites in, but i have no idea what infi is like before heat treating, for all I know it comes from the mill un-annealed.

I sent Jerry an e-mail but I have not received a response yet. But if is not heat treated or finished I will not be using it.
