Basic (9) Question

I've owned and used a lot of great knives over the years. By far, my favorites are large (9"+) choppers, specifically bowies. One of my favorites has been my Basic 9. I've tried a Battle Rat, handled a BK9, used a Newt Livesay, an Ontario RTAK, a 5/16" Cold Steel Kukri. However, by far my two favorites are the B9 and my customized Western W49 Bowie from the early/mid 80's.

I really like a blade heavy chopper, I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a FBM and maybe a limited as well, but in the mean time can anyone recommend a less expensive "alternative" in a good 9-11" chopper? I've been considering the Camillus OVB (11"), but didn't really want to put that much into it. Also considering the RD9. What would "feel" most like a B9 in your opinion?

Thanks,

GregB

The Trail Master feels lighter because of the neutral handle and the point profile reducess mass at the front, the Basic-9 is a better chopper because of the handle angle but would not be as good as a stabbing tool.

The Becker 9 is lighter because of the thinner gauge but the wide blade adds a little bit more. I guess the thinner profile at the edge can aid in chopping.

The Battle Rat is very similar in profile to the Basic-9 this should feel the most like a B-9.

The Kukri is another thing altogether, should be a better chopper than all teh others but the handle has to be modified a little. I remove the top back hump with knife (cut the rubber and then sand) and press in an bicycle inner tube for real rubber traction. It feels great.

I never seen the other in person.

the battlerat is the replacement to the B9 in feel for sure, I have had both

Battlerat is my first choice. If you cannot find one of them and can wait a bit, the next knife up from Scrap Yard is going to be a 9+ inch chopper with Res-C handle. It should be a winner.

Basic #9 is prolly the most under valued Busse knife made.

One sold on the For Sale part of BF maybe a week or so ago for about $10.00 over the suggested original Retail from seven long years ago.

When having any doubts about a Basic #9.........just buy it.

What other knives compare well to the Basics longevity of edge?

Only Busse INFI knives, no others, including Swamp Rat(non INFI)

I saw that one and would have snatched it up -- just got there too late :(

I've never had one, but man it seems like it'd be a great user

I have used a Battle Rat and it's a good blade, you wouldn't regret getting one.

Wish I had a Basic 9 to chop with:(

I was thinking about putting in a bid on that Basic 7,
but looked at it this morning and there is a bidding war going on:eek:
I wanted it for a user, but man that's too much for me.

I got my little Basic 3 and really do like it, just need a bigger one to go with it:D

I'd say that the Basic 9 would be the best of the big choppers if you could find one:thumbup:

edited to say,
(sorry GregB, forgot that you already have one)

No help here, move along....

I got a Basic 9 from that same seller and am bidding on that Basic 7. I've always been a Basic fan and jumped on the Battlerat when they came out... I like the resiprene on a heavy user.

Good grab on the B9:D
Good luck on the B7:thumbup:

The basic 9 is indeed sweet...oh wait, no you don't want one, they're not cool enough, now quit bidding them up so I can afford another.
