basic and silly AXIS question

I have a stupid question. With my mini griptillian, I can do the gravity knife thing where one pulls back the lock tab things and flicks the wrist and it comes out. Is it bad to do that in reverse? In other words, does closing the knife this way damage it?

thanks

I assume it would do as much damage as flicking it out. Note, I am not qualified to answer that question, it is just an educated guess.

Short answer: no.

Flick your minigrip day and night, with abandon. I've done it with several minigrips thosuands of times and they always work perfectly.

I also flick the 710. It literally fals open atthe slightest flick. When closing I hold it up, pull back on the AXIS lock and it falls shut. You never have to touch it with the second hand either for opening or closing. I think that the weight of the blade is what makes this work so easily. The 610 is prettymuch the same. Turn the pivot screw until you feel it start to tighten and the stop. No blade play at that point. Militec helps ;>)

oh, i've no trouble doing it, and do it often

i'm wondering whether flicking it shut is bad for it. does the blade ever contact anything as it comes back? sometimes if i flick it back too fast and it sorta bounces back, i'm worried that it's the blade bouncing against something. or is it just the like locking tab part of the blade hitting something.

I guess, really, its this-when the knife's just sitting there shut, is the blade touching anything?

It definitely gives the impression the blade is hitting something when you flick it closed. However, under close examination, the impact is really the tang hitting the axis bar (either in the open or "closed" lock positions). I've never seen the lockbar wear at all, but even if it did damage the lockbar, Benchmade's rotating bar would distribute the damage over so many angles it'd probably be irrelevent. But point in case, there are plenty of people who play with their Benchmades day and night, and we're all doing fine.

I wouldn't be too worried with the Mini, but I have seen 2 806 models that became loose.

Benchmade fixed these for the owners, but I was suprised that these super fast and hard openers (the guys) were able to do the feat.

I take it easy now with the full size (approx. 4-inch blade) knives. That, and most of mine are out of production versions/models.

However, I would not do that in front of an LEO or in front of the general public as it might very well lead to a confrontation with the law over whether your knife is a "gravity blade."

FullerH....Great point as when opened that way, especially since you pull a lever in the handle, it is by NY and Federal law a gravity knife then.....

Just make sure your fingers are clear. I have a 610 and closing in this manner is like a guillotine if your fingers are not clear, especially in that the weight of the blade makes for a rapid closing.

Artfully has it right, the only part of blade that hits upon closure is way back at the tang where it contacts the axis bar, unlike some of the old lockbacks and such where the blade could come in contact with the backspacer when enough force was applied. If you look (on my knives, at least;)), you can usually see a line of dirt on the tang where it hits the axis bar when it's closed, and no marks on the backspacer where some would be sure to develop after time with a blade hitting it over and over again in the same spot. Very clever design, IMO!

I support that!

I do remember, that Jason from BM Forums once said, that Axis never had a problem with flicking open or closed.

As with all, it is a matter of how it is done.

By pulling the lock back, not much force is needed to get the blade to move. Without pulling it back, wear can be increased theoretically.

My personal opinion is: Axis are made for this too. For this they are better than any other folder lock.

Enjoy. Maybe you want to be sure, than ask BM directly and store the answer.
