PW here,

I am looking for a way to store all my growing gear for a 72hr kit in a organized manner. I would like to use some kind of soft sided case whith some sort of adjustable dividers so I could get into and find what I need fast. (the kit will be for 2 adults + 1 toddler) Any ideas?

Look at blackhawkindustries.com for an assortment of bags. I would advise the use of backpacks for you and your wife so that neither of you would have to carry too heavy of a load. Remember that water is the heaviest thing that has to be carried and that you need a minimum of a gallon a day per person just for consumption.

Hso,

Thanks for the input, I may well look at the blackhawk (or eagle) gear when I start working on BOB type plans, right now I am working more around stay home stuff.

But, I might merge the two together. who knows.

How about a wide-mouth duffel or aviation bag? If you can't find one that has dividers, try packing the contents in Hefty 2.5 gallon freezer bags or the equivalent.

I have an ancient canvas duffel bag that works well with this system. The bags keep things together that belong together. They also allow me to pack tighter by squeezing all the air out before closing the bags. I like to stack them vertically (on edge) to see the contents better. The bags are also useful for bringing home clothes that need laundering.

it's not softsided, but a surplus GI footlocker is very useful at home. your gear/foodstuffs won't get broken, you can sit on it, stack things on it, and lock it (keeping little ones out of it). mouse-resistant, too.

You may want to look at using an EMT/Paramedic bag for this. You might try looking at bags from Iron Duck or Pacific Safety Products. I use products from both companies and they have the movable dividers that you're looking for as well as being softsided and durable.

If it's just for stay at home...how about those plastic boxes with lids they sell at Home Base type stores. I use several, they stack well and can be thrown in the truck easily.

Keep food in one, meds in another, emerg. gear/supplies in another. You can use a label maker or permanent marker to ID the boxes and the contents.

Get 2 of the least expensive 40 qt plastic ice chests available from your local K, Wal Mart, Big Lots. Be sure that they have sturdy handles on each end and that they have flat lids so that they can be stacked. Select a size that can be carried by the two of you when full of supplies. Segragate all the stored gear into stuff or clear plastic bags. If it's a home emergency take the gear out of the coolers and fill them with enough water (remember the gallon a day per person rule)for the duration of the crisis. You can also get a sturdy folding dolly or luggage cart to move the coolers. Be sure to get a large wheel version so that you can navigate stairs.

I've carried field gear all around the US in coolers and I've never had one fail to hold up. Heck you can even use them to sit on or eat at.

Look around here and see if anything strikes your fancy, a lot of 'portable organizers'. I use their small gatemouth bags and the bucketboss, their contractor's briefcase...heck, half a dozen of their products to organize my stuff.

As mentioned, if you take a look at:

....you will probably run across something that meets your needs. Blackhawks stuff is a little pricey.., but very tough.., and you won't have to replace it...

The plastic boxes/coolers with wheels would work well. Don't have to carry it, just drag it along.
I use backpacks and G.I. duffel bags with the shoulder straps.
