Looking for a used GPS unit on ebay and other sights. I've settled on the Garman etrex or the Geko. Just need a basic unit, nothing fancy. Any model that I should stay away from?

You should checkout the forums on geocahing.com
lots of great information over there. I think its pretty hard to buy a bad GPS nowadays, they all work great its just a matter of finding one to fit your own personal preferences. I'm still using an old Magellan GPS315. Works great. If I ever do upgrade I would definately get one that supports mapping.
Also, if you're not already considering it get into doing some geocaching it's a lot of fun.

hope this helps

Hi
Got a Etrex and a Geko 201.
Geko's battery-compartment is outside the waterproof case, so if intented for water-'sport' Etrex is a better choice.
(The rest is waterproof so you 'only' need new batteries if dipped)
Etrex is larger and heavier, but has a (IMO) slightly better display, and due to larger batteries (AA vs. AAA) almost double up-time.
The on-off button on Geko is not fool-proof - it can turn off/on in your pocket!
(Pls. be aware that Geko 101 hasnt a dataport!)
IMO, if weight is priority, choice Geko, otherwise Etrex.

I have had the opportunity to test the Etrex in a number of capacities and it is a great tool. I strongly recommend it as a base model GPS.

Thanks for the replies... I'm leaning toward the Etrex at this point.

I would go with the Etrex. I would suggest that you upgrade to the Legend though. You can download Waypoints and it comes with a pretty good basemap of North America and you can download topo and blue charts too. For a little more $ you'll have a unit with great features that you can grow into.

I use the Geko 201 for search and rescue.

It is waterproof 100%. They fixed the on/off button with a software upgrade. It does not have a map function but I don'y like GPS maps anyway. Battery life is great, its half the size and weight of the yellow etrex and consitantly locks in more satelights faster than untis that cost a lot more. YOu can download and upload all the waypoints and data from your pc like other GPS's.

It is the perfect GPS for my needs and doesn't cost you an arm.

Highly recommended.

The battery compartment of the Geko is not waterproof!
(Both Geko and Etrex are IPX7, not IPX8!)
The Etrex battery compartment is inside the 'waterrproof' area.
Battery life according to Garmin for Geko are 12h vs. Etrex 22h.
Using lastest firmware (2.50) on my Geko and Iam still able to turn the unit on, inside a 'Lowepro D-res 8-S'!
BUT Geko is waas/egnos 'enabled'! (If the sats is 'on').
