OK Guys,

Always lots of discussion on knife steel. Have a look at this stuff and see if it is good enough for you to copy and have available to send new people to on this forum. This page is basic and good for beginners, (I think anyway), we all can keep it as a file to inject when some person needs a lesson. Have a look keep it or declare it c __p your call.........300Bucks.

Thats a better page then I've seen in the past 300, last one I'd seen was only the component percentages-thanks.

I've had that saved in my favorites for years and refer to it often. Its a good read. Thanks, 300. DM

That article sure doesn't think much of 420....
represent the low end of stainless steels
weak, and not very wear resistant

I think you are refering to the sub-group 420 and 420j...
425mod and 420HC were sub-grouped with 440A...
also the author placed dis-claimers that better Heat Treat will move a steel up in performance...

I'll still place my money on older 440C whenever possible ;)

Nice fella, and his web site is a very good resource. I've had several conversations with him. Zviad has a passion for exotic, high performance, extreme high edge retention, alloys. It sometimes blinds him to the positive properties of other less exotic alloys. The phrase "good enough for what its for" doesn't register with him.

He is correct that 420HC does not have high wear resistance, nor does any other alloy which does not contain a lot of carbides. But "weak" it is not. Not the way Paul Bos taught Buck to heat treat it.

It's good enough for most of what I do with a pocket knife.
