  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Long time lurker, i think I'm ready to jump in to sheath making. I've read all the stickies and I know "how". It time to put knowledge into practice. So, I want to check my items to see if I really need all of them, if there are some I don't need yet, missing others.

Necessary
Leather, thread, dye, dye applicator, 0 size harness needles.
Grover, knife, skiver, awl, spacer

Optional:
Jeweler pliers, stitching pony, bone folder

How am I doing? Tandy here I come.

If you want to just try leatherworking, you definitely don't need a stitching pony.

Leather, wing dividers/stitching groover, harness needles, glue, a suitable cutting surface, a steel straight edge, and a knife are all you really need. I wouldn't worry about dyeing your first project, just try getting the hang of getting your project together first. Once you get the hang of things and want to continue, I would suggest a burnisher, edge bevelers, and anything else you might want to play with.

Tandy should have a scrap bin of leather where you can pick up some good sized pieces for cheap as well.

Get the bone folder and pliers, I wouldn't want to do without them.
I think you can do without the skivertool. You can skiver with a simple, sharp knive if you want to.

And have an old cutting board or plank or so to have between the leather and your table when you use the awl.
(guess why I know)
I strongly prefer my diamond shaped cross cut awl

The pliers, bone folder and even the stitching pony would go much higher on my list than the dyes.
