Is the Basic line of knives (ie Basic 3, Basic 9) made of the same INFI we see on the TB or BWM? I was on the Hog Cult Website and they list it as M-INFI... whats the difference if there is one?

M-INFI is the acronym for "Modified INFI". M-INFI obviously pre-dates INFI, which is a very small step up in most or all regards. That step up, however, is so small that I think it highly unlikely that anybody will be able to tell the difference in actual use. On paper though, the characteristics of INFI that make it so great do give it the edge to M-INFI.

There is a video, somewhere, of a B9 in an evaluation against a cold steel large blade of Carbon V. Its a good video and really shows how m-INFI shines against the competition. Normal INFI should be even better. My understanding is the Basic line was designed to be more cost efficient but still provide almost all the benefits of Busse knife. The story seems to end with the m-INFI getting expensive so no longer truly providing any cost savings.

The Basic line is actually better than comparable newer Infi blades IMO...it might all be in the "grind" and the advantages of the Asymentical Grind...but has anyone tested the SAR8 with the Basic 9??

My SAR 8 is going to need a fair bit of tapering to a more acute angle on the convexed "tear-drop" edge profile to "live with" my Basic 9...and the Basic 9 just touches up "so easy" using the fine ceramic rod on my sharp maker for the standard edge side followed by one or two strokes on a strop for the convex...I will post some photo's and results once I sort out the SAR8...in fairness my Basic 9 has had a lot of TLC on the edge and the SAR8 should have the same .....

But there is definately something in the Asymetrical Grind...especially on edge retention...

Dunno about a video.....

A number of years ago (early 2000's) Mike Turber did a write-up with pics of a Basic 9 vs the CS Trailmaster in CarbonV steel. It eventually disappeared from the web. I posted my back-up copy of it on my ISP site for a while so that the other Hogs could archive it from there if they wanted. I currently don't have it online anywhere. However, it may be hosted on one of the Hog cult info sites, I'm not sure. If so, could one of y'all please post a link to it. Many TIA.

As for the Basic series vs Combat grade, INFI vs M-INFI, asymetrical vs v-grind, Res-C vs micarta/G-10, etc etc etc, my opinion remains to be:
If you ever get into a situation where you actually need the absolute empirical numerical difference between "Choice A" and "Choice B" in any of those categories, the person holding the knife (you) will have long ago been obliterated by the severity or extreme physical rigors of the environment or situation.

Gotta love those Basics!!! :D :D :D

I have the Turber article saved but not sure how to send it or make it available.....if you send me an e-mail I will try and get it to you.

Damn, too many medications. That is what I was thinking about. It had a ton of pictures attached to the review. I believe I have it saved as a Word file also, not sure if all the pics survived this transition but I likely have most of them.
