Basic modificatons

Damn Cliiff

I modified my car kind of like your knife when I hit a tree.

Cliff does appear to have conceded the collector value at some point along the way. Beyond that, I'd say it's a thing of beauty--a truly honest knife.

I feel sure its maker would agree.

Cliff,

An impressive sight for sure!!

We can all rest easy now. Most of us would never heap that kind of abuse on our Busses, but it's always nice to know what they can take.
Keep up the fine work! You have a hungry audience eagerly awaiting your next demolition...oops...I mean...testing project.

Regards,
Rich

WOW! So that's what you guys do with our blades. I am no longer impressed that our knives have been able to stand up to Cliff's abusive tests. I am now, much more impressed that they have been able to stand up to his modifications. . . .

The handle reminds me of my first car (fade to dream sequence) a 1968 Chevelle Malibu, 327 V-8, 400 turbo, 12 bolt posi with a 456 gear. The body had been left behind in a few of northern Ohio's infamous potholes. Rust was everywhere and it was two years before I found out that there was suppose to be another 4 inches of steel extending below the rusted rear quarter panels. Not a problem for a 16 year old kid and a 5 gallon bucket of BONDO. I simply mixed it up and poured it into the trunk. I then simply ground it smooth on the outside wherever it oozed out. The car weighed approx. 72 pounds more when I was finished and looked very similar to Cliff's handle.

I'd like to thank Cliff for taking me back in time to my youth and my first car. It was UGGGLY! but had unlimited horsepower. . . and that's all that really matters!

In reality I love nothing more than to see one of our blades that has truly become "one" with its owner. I made my dad a knife in 1983 and he carried it every day until it got UGGGLY! When he passed away in 1987 it was in his effects bag that came back from the hospital. My mom gave it back to me to keep. It is the scratches and nicks and well-worn look that tell the story of the man. It would have been sad, indeed, if it had looked the same as the day he received it.

Excellent job Cliff!

Yours in Nuclear Bondo,

Jerry Busse

While I'm not brave enought o do something like that myself, I have to admit it's "cute", in a homely sort of way. Way to go, Mr. Stamp.

And Jerry, you memories brought back some of my own, namely, a `67 Impala with not a single straight panel on it, the same quarter panel, um, "bio-degradability" as on your car. "Nuclear Bondo" indeed. There was a reason that stuff had a funny green color...

Yours in remembering fond old cars with nuclear-green patches...

Damn, Cliff, what is that WHITE STUFF all over the handle...looks like an old bandage in bad need of being changed. Hope there is no gangrine(spelling?) under that bandage

but, hey, if it works for you then you have to live with it,however, don't give up your day job to take up customizing knives...

That white material is a patching compound. After I deepened the cutouts for my index and pinky finger I wanted to thicken the handle but I soon realized that no amount of cutting would make the handle thicker - years of higher education at work.

I mixed up a patching compound slapped it on, and when it dried removed the excess. The green tape is on there as the patching compound does not offer a nice grip. The new handle is much thicker across the middle and tapers towards the front and back. It fills the swell of my hand better but reactions are mixed from friends. Some like the new one, some like the old one.

Based on the replies, it is a good thing I cleaned it up before I took a picture. Eventually I will replace the handle (it was a work in progress) with Micarta slabs of the same shape.

Take it easy Jerry, and if I get to the next Blade show I am bringing you a case of decent dark beer.

-Cliff
