I started working with Kydex a couple of weeks ago and learned a lot from youtube. One of the videos I watched was about a sheath based survival kit.
I started with a Mora Carbon Clipper and tweaked it a little. One of the cool things about Moras is that they are so inexpensive that you can play with them and if it doesn't work out you aren't out a lot of money.
I wanted a little more tip control so I added a choil. Then I squared up the spine of the blade so it would throw sparks a little better. Next I painted the red butt cap black with Fusion spray paint. It really seems to be holding up pretty well. Finally I drilled a lanyard hole and added a lanyard.
I played around with the Mora sheath and it doesn't didn't work out hence my work with Kydex.
I do a rectangular sheath because it cord wraps well. Under the cord I place a firesteel and a diamond hone from a EZE LAP hone. I also use the cord to fix a small watch band compass to the front. You have to remove the knife to get a proper reading but it is that big a problem.
It is lightweight, I estimate it to weigh about 6 oz.
I wear it as a neck knife and it works like a charm.
Here is my version.
I welcome all your comments and questions.
Thanks,
Rick
