This is a knife that I am in the process of carving the handle on. This handle is a little different from our normal carved handle and I think we will be doing more of it. I was sending an "in progress" picture to the future owner and thought I would post it here too. It has a 5" blade that is wrapped up at this time to protect it and me. The handle is sambar stag with a mortised tang. It has a nickel silver guard, spacers and pins. I used the nickel silver because the pins carve better than stainless would and that is what the customer asked for. This side of the handle is nearly finished and I'm about half way through on the other.

Harry, that looks like it takes some time, but the texture really works for me. Nice job.

Quite a few hours and years of experience invested here. Outstanding accomplishment. Thanks for sharing here.

Harry,

You obviously ain't usin' the Chi-o-neze basket-weave leather stamp that I got from "Not-So-Dandy-Tandy".

When are you and Charlie gonna sell that sand-lot and move across the border to Alabama where we got real dirt?:D

Love the basket weave on the handle. You guys always amaze this old country boy.

Robert

Robert, I think Charlie is halfway there. His son just graduated from Auburn and has decided to stay. Already filed for citizenship.

No stamps on this one. I wish it was that easy. Laying the thing out is about as aggravating as carving it. This is all done with a couple of carving knives I made from CPM S30V scraps and some tired, sore fingers.

Wow. Amazing work. I can't imagine the patience it must take and how trying of that patience this must be. :p

Very nice basket weave, Harry

I'm really liking the stacked spacers too.

Please let us see the whole knife when completed.

Take care

Charles

It's not all that hard really. You just take a tool and remove anything that does not look like basket weave.......right, Harry?:D

Paul

you guys got some Celt in you?
Reminds me a lot of illuminated manuscript which I am very fond of. Kind of a 'knot worked basket weave', which is almost a contradiction...
Anyway:thumbup: that's amazingly great looking stuff going on there.

Paul, it is not hard at all. A good sharp blade of S30V cuts many things well and stag is no exception. Just have to remember to never show anyone your scrap box.

Lorien we do come from where there were Celts, but it's been a lot of years. The family has been in Georgia since the middle 1700's and haven't strayed but a few times. There was this native American woman at Fort Frederica with the last name of Mathews. That might have been one of the times. :D Our family did ride over with Oglethorpe.

This knife, when I get through with it, will be headed to Coop for some good pictures. I keep playing with the camera, but rather be making knives and leave the good pictures to the pro. I'll post it when I get it.

Thanks to all for the comments. Charlie is chomping at the bit to get his chance at a critique on this one and I am sure there will be some cleanup to do after he gets through. His favorite comment is "It will look good when you finish with it."

Harry, I've been keeping the scrap bits leftover of s30v that I've been hacking away at recently, and I'm so glad you mentioned reusing scraps to build carving tools. That stuff ain't cheap and I don't want to waste any of it. That advice is gold, right there.

Yowza!!! I LOVE that handle!!! And yes, I think you will need to do at least one more of those--specifically when you guys get to me on your wait list. That is simply outstanding!
