Does anyone know what old bastard files are made of? I think they are W2 but i'm not sure.

It varies by brand. I believe Nicholson files are made of W2 which has some vanadium, a plus. I would avoid cheap imports which may use a lesser alloy and only be case hardened.

They may well be 0-1. If it is really rusty, it probably is.

Forgive me, but I couldn't pass up this opportunity to pun:

"I made my first blade from one of those 8" bastards, but now I prefer the 10" S.O.B.'s!" :-)
