and i finally made a knife to use it on. a buddy of mine always gives my dad deer jerkey, salami, brats and whatever else he happens to make so i decided to make him a knife to skin his deer with.

i hated to pin them on since the wood looks so good so i made it a pinless construction.
it is 8 1/4" overall with a 4 1/2" cutting edge. it is 2" at the widest point. i made it out of 3/16" 1075 with a differential heat treat.

Those scales look fantastic. It looks like it will be a heck of a skinning blade.
I hope it gets used well.

Those scales came out pretty good, but I really like that design more than anything. Sweet looking work Richard!

i'm glad you guys like how it turned out. tiiiiiiim, there are no pins at all. i have a special way to do my pinless tangs. i sent you an email.

That looks really nice Richard! It looks like it has a little bit of hunter and a little bit Japanese kitchen knife influence.

It was good talking to you this afternoon. We'll definitely have to get together one of these days and grind some steel. After taking a look at the picture of your knife again, I don't think the wood is zebrawood. The color does seem to be close to lacewood like you suggested, but the grain doesn't seem quite right. I looked through my wood stash and other possibilities could be bubinga or rosewood. Is there a chance that it's a laminate (like Dymondwood)? When Koval's was still in business in Columbus they used to sell some stabilized laminates that were dyed to look like rosewood or cocobolo.

Here's a pic of a knife I made 5 or so years ago with a zebrawood handle for reference (go easy on me, it was one of my first knives!). The front spacer behind the brass guard is rosewood, the rest of the handle is zebrawood.

thats a nice looking knife nathan. i'm not sure what kind of wood it is now. i have some lacewood but its not like what is on the knife. the wood is solid and not laminated. maybe someone knows what kind it is and will post it.
