anyone know how to capture a bat without killing it, it's hanging from my ceiling above the stairs. It's trapped in there right now, but too high to reach

Good luck those rascals can be very hard to catch unless it is sick. Good chance to use a blowgun. I have tried to catch them several times and only suceeded a few times. Very hard. Usually the end up being killed by the home owner just in case they have rabies. Obtw watch out they can bite the crap out of you.

Honestly ?.. kill it.

There are bazillions more where that one spawned from. ASHTX is right on , that bat may have rabies or a host of other diseases including ticks (lyme).
You could call Animal Control and see if they will do it , but they may charge you.
Personally I would sock it with something heavy , carefully pick it up and stick in a bag , and be done with it.

I took one out of the firestation once with a cornbroom. It took quite a while, though. How about a fishing net?

Trapped one in a garbage can once. Don't have any clue if it is hiding out of reach though.

Could try to scare it out with a vacuum cleaner hose. I don't know of any animal that is not scared of a vacuum cleaner :P

We used to get them I the house every now and then. A clothes basket is whatcha need! :D

Any critter that can eat up to 600 mesquitos an hour needs to kept alive. We have lots of them around my area and so far they have stayed outside.

Squirt at it with a water pistol until it decides to leave.

We had one on the basement wall and I put a pail over it, slid a cardboard under that, took it outside and released it, and it took off for the woods like, um, a bat out of hell.

If it's right above the stairs getting to it directly could be tricky. Just scare it so it moves to another location. Before doing so open nearby windows/door so it can leave on it's own. Try to herd/lead it out one of the exits by repeatedly spooking it in the direction of the windows/doors. If that's unsuccessful use a fishing net, cardboard box, or any other suitably sized container to capture it. If you still cannot get it out of the house alive, resort to killing it. ( That could prove to be eqaully difficult though) In my exerience bat's are incredibly evasive flyers so your best chance would be to hit it from a distance when perched per se. Quietly move up on it and strike it with a long stick or anything else that can be used from a distance.

If all else fails you can adopt it as a family pet.

Hope you're successful.

My brother gets them in his shop all the time. They catch them with a fairly long handled butterfly net then release them outside. Oh BTW, they usually get tangled in the fine mesh netting so he wears a pair of heavy duty welder's gloves to remove them with - their teeth are sharp as needles but too short to penetrate the gloves. (and the mean little sob's will definitely bite you if you try to handle them!)

I get them in the house, now and then. I don't know how the little devils get in, but they get my dogs all worked up and it always seems to happen when I'm in a nice, deep sleep. It's gotten to the point where I always know what's going on when the dogs all go nuts at midnight. Another blasted bat! Anyway...when they fly, they have to drop downward to start out, so you use that to your advantage. If he's on a wall or even the ceiling, use a broom or dustmop to dislodge the little critter and catch him in an old towel. You might need help. Otherwise, if he's low enough, on a wall or something, just put the towel over him and wrap him up in it and take him outside. I've done it four or five times and it only takes a few minutes. I haven't been bit, yet. One more point. Don't let yourself be freaked out about it, it's just a mouse with wings. They won't attack you, all they want is to get out of your house. You just help them achieve that goal.

Open the back door and turn on the bat signal? :D

Or you could keep it and harvest the guano

As for any other ideas... I got nothing

Problem resolved!

My frat brothers and I threw a towel at it until it fell down and got stuck. I trapped it under a garbage can, taped a poster to the top of the garbage can, and put the bat in the garbage can in another frat house :D

(oh yeah, did I mention the bat was stuck in my frat house? not my home house)
