Haven't really done much batoning until recently. I've been using my TGLB and it batons very well, but I figured a little extra size wouldn't hurt, so I tried my NMFBM just now.

My first attempt might have been a little over ambitious

The NMFBM definitely softened it up a little for me, I got through the same spot with one hit from the splitting maul.

This next one went down almost without a fight:

Batoning is fun :)

Now that just looks fun. Glad to see you out getting that beauty dirty.

ummm, so you had a maul with you and still needed to Baton? I really dont get it....

oh, I get the knife freak thing, as a knife maker and avid outdoorsman, But the truth is I have spent some years living outside for over 180 days, and I have a very extensive outdoor resume' and have never, not once, needed to baton anything...OH well, to each his own, and they are good pics, just sayin'

Im sure he didnt need to baton it, rather he wanted to baton it. Kinda like eating apple pie, you dont need it but when you do, boy does it makes you feel good.

ummm, I chop for fun, so I don't need to do any of this, but that particular piece is very twisted, not very easy to get a very solid hit on and has a natural arc down low. I've been beating on it with the maul (as much as I can) for the last couple sessions at least.

I walked around with my blade and looked for a big piece, purposely chose one I thought would be too big, and had at it.

I've never needed to baton anything, I hadn't even ever thought about it until I came here and had never tried until a couple weeks ago. With a giant knife like that NMFBM it's just silly and fun, like having a 1800W car stereo. You don't need to do it.

Splitting kindling with the TGLB is the only practical thing I think I've done as far as batoning and I admit, it's not very useful. Then again, neither is me chipping away at my scrub oak log with my big choppers other than being fun and good exercise. Oh, and I have pounds and pounds of free kindling for anyone who wants it :)

Sure a chain saw and splitting maul are more efficient when processing wood however not nearly as much fun. Thanks for sharing the pics.
