Can you experienced woodsfolk identify this? I found a few of these in the holes in the wood.

i think we call those branches :)

or knots :)

don't chop them. they're usually harder than the base wood :)

your ipad is really dully if it's leaving splits like that

We call that your ready made atladl for the the March challenge thread. Just round off the edges and polish that up a bit.

What DerekH said. :D
It almost looks like a tree grew around the branch of another tree, doesn't it?
It also looks like that little branch is resin impregnated, aka fatwood.
You found multiples though? What sort of wood is this?

I'm not sure, but congrats on the iPad 2!

I was able to charge the iPad, and then BAM! Kids swooped in and took it from me. Haven't seen it since.

The wood split very easily, and the knot things were more in the middle of the plank, so the knife didn't need to that far down. I'd baton, the wood split, and then those cylindrical pieces of what I guess is resin would drop. I was wondering where they all came from until I found this piece kind of partially wedged still.

Not gold, so no contest entry for me.

No idea what kind of wood. Came from furniture.

Thanks for all the replies! When I get home I'll try to round up some of those pieces and try to burn them and see how they take. Maybe a few shavings'll end up in a fire tin.
