Batoning with a D2 Outcast?

Please don't make this about batoning in general and whether you are for or against it. I specifically want to know how THIS knife with handle it.

I don't have any big fixed blades and I really like the looks of the Outcast.

From what I've read D2 steel is thought of as being a bit brittle. How would this knife hold up to some batoning?

What is Kershaw's stance on batoning warranty-wise?

I don't think you have anything to worrie about, I have batoned, cut, chopped and abused my outcast for the past 3 years and havent had a single problem. The coating does make it bind in the wood though, thats why I stripped it.

P.S. put a convex edge on it, it works much better that way.

Dekz, baton away. I've beat the snot outta mine (although I haven't tried to pound it thru a cinder block or car hood or a piece of pipe with a 3 lb. sledge ) and it hasn't given it any problems at all.

knifenut is correct...they like a convex edge.

I do not see a problem, did not find anything on knifetests but these two reviews are why I decided on the OutCast

OutCast vs Becker Brute Have been hacking away with mine no problems

Did you do that by hand? What did you use? I just re-profiled mine to put a 30 degree edge on it. A good 20 hour ordeal

As long as you baton properly and avoid knots, most any knife should take it. It's really not all that stressful on a knife.

It will most likely ruin the coating though.

Yep, took about 3 days using EMS convex sharpening block. http://www.jreindustries.com/EMS.htm

About wore out every peice of sandpaper that came with it but it sure cuts nice.

Nice looking work did you re-profile it too? If so what angle did you put on it? I put a 30 degree angle on mine and not real happy with the result. Did not come out as sharp as I wanted but don't want an edge so thin that it is no longer a great chopper
