Batoning with the RTAK II

Decided to try batoning for the first time this weekend, used my relatively new RTAKII on a small pile of mixed soft and hardwoods. When all was said and done it did really well but came out with a warp (~1/4" in size) in the cutting edge at the mid point of the blade. I know an axe works better and all that but I was just curious if this is common and what I might try to fix the issue. THX

Not sure what to say except contact Ontario on this. IMO, it shoudn't have warped.

Yet another perfect example of why ESEE formerly Rat Cutlery severed their ties with Ontario, good riddens.

The same thing happened to me. I brought my RTAKII and Cold Steel Recon Scout out for some batoning, the RTAKII hit a knot in the wood and it bent the edge pretty bad. Luckily I was able to hammer most of the dent out. My RTAKII is on weed and brush duty from now on. The Recon Scout plowed through the wood with no problem. I have a Junglas also and there is no comparison in quality so glad ESEE broke away from Ontario.

Not saying you can't break or damage a Junglas, but if you do, well, we replace it.

Let's not go down this road. Ontario is a good company and they stand behind their product. There is no animosity from us towards Ontario. None. We wish them the best. The RTAK II is a great deign and there are a lot of them in use under hard conditions.

I use and beat the crap out of my rtakII...i baton with it and chop with it...never had a problem....sounds like you just got a bad heat treat....my guess is they will prob. make good on it...good luck

I batonned the daylights out my RTAK-2 and it holds up good. It had it share of rolled egde but a few minutes with the Sharpmaker stones and it was back in the game.
My bet is to contact Ontario and see what comes out.

It's just so admirable that you and ESEE take the high road whenever possible - and have thru the process. You have my respect. I have the Izula, HEST, and an old 5.

I bounced around thru many different knife makers in last 30 years of using them hard....but your warranty, your company stance, your dedication to making hard use tools for the masses...

...every knife I will buy from now is gonna be ESEE.

That's what I'm talking about !!

Spoken by a true gentlemen.. Nice..

thanks for the responses....Yes in hind sight I probably should have picked up a Junglas but the RTAK had pretty favourable reviews and the price was right. I will try and sharpen it out - see what happens and maybe give it a slightly less demanding job description.
