Hello.

Has anyone batoned with a Chris Reeve knife? I just got the Shadow IV and was wondering if it would be OK to baton with the knife. I usually need to baton depending on what type of wood is available or if it is wet.

EDIT- Now wondering what everyone stores in the hollow handle?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated (EDIT- Now for storage ideas for the handle).

Thanks,
Rob

Although you should not baton with a folder, I have used my small regular sebenza to baton through firewood with no problem. Probably went through around 4 big logs.

I have split up fire wood, notched sticks for shelters/traps and the like by batoning with
my Pacific, GB and one piece knives many, many times and have never had any trouble.

Just don't use a 10lb hammer and you will be fine

Thanks everyone!

Haze- First thing I do is find a stick to carve a handle on to use as my batoning hammer!

krazichinamin- No way! Don't know if I could use a folder. You got some big...you know what I mean.

The Shadow IV is an awesome knife!

I need to start a thread to find out what to put in the handle. I am thinking fatwood and lint. That's how I start a fire. I think I am going to update the title.

Thanks again for the info!

Rob

I would like to quote a very knowledgeable member's response on those knife 'tests':

I have used several of the one piece line with no problems. When I used them, I used them to prepare camp sites, clear shooting lanes around my deer blind, food prep, things you use a knife for. I have not beat on them with a 3lb sledge hammer into a 2x4in a vise. I do know noss broke 2 serrated models by pounding on them with a 3lb sledge hammer. They were both serrated versions. I dont care for serrated knives, though I have 2 of them as you can see. Both broke in the serrated area where there is less metal due to the serrations. I am not a fan of noss and his tests, even before he broke the 2 crk. I just feel it was blatent knife abuse and anything will break when it is pushed to certain limits. I look at is this way. CRK has been making the one piece line for nearly 25 years and have sold many many thousands and I have only ever heard of 2 breaking and it was due to them being pounded by a sledge hammer. They are made from A2 tool steel. It would be like banging 2 hammers together, there is warnings all over tools that tool steel is so hard, it will break when heavily impacted my another hard steel, like tool steel. I consider myself to be a part of the CRK family. I have talked to Mr. Reeve on the phone and have emailed them constantly when putting together my CRK timeline I have on bladeforums. I feel if I am in a situation where I need a knife to save my life, I am confident a CRK will do just that.

The Shadow IV knife sure feels tough. I was wondering about the grind. I always heard the way to go was flat or convex. But if you can baton with it without problem then I feel OK about it. This knife is my first big fixed blade with this type of grind.

are there any pics of the "tests" and broken knives?

i visited the site.this guy breaks all brands of knives,so i think the Project 1 did well.i counted 93 his with the 3 lb club hammer before breakage.did well i would say.

Would have done better if he'd used anything, anything in the world other than a blunt piece of tool steel to pound on it with.

i remember an article in Knives Illustrated a few years back where Rob Simonich was testing 1 of his fixed blades.i think it was a new design in a new steel [S30V,but i could be mistaken].1 of the tests involved hammering the blade through a piece of mild steel [1in wide by .25 iirc].went through once, broke on the second attempt.Ethan Becker was present as well.
any blade can be broken, but i get the impression the guy who does the testing looks to break customs or high end knives and then trashes the makers for selling high overpriced junk

I pounded my Project I (with serrations) through several pieces of wood to split logs for firewood and experienced no problems whatsoever. Its A2 tool steel - it should stand up to that easily. I used another log to pound on the spine FYI.

I think I recall seeing Chris baton firewood with a Green Beret on the DVD, so yeah no worries.

Haha yeah I don't like that guys tests. He claims they are fair but I just don't understand maximum abuse tests. Most of the CRKs didn't do well, especially the Green Beret, but it doesn't make it a bad knife. According to his tests the only good knives are Striders, Busses, and some shit $20 knives or Cold Steels and that's just wrong.
