People love it...people hate it...

You all know I've done it:

Ignore the time travel involved in this pic... :D

I even batonned a Medford folder just for the sheer hell of it:

But why, oh why is it so much required in every survival or bushcraft knife video?

Well, I think I figured it out. ;)

Or maybe not, who knows.

Let's continue arguing about it for another 20 years or so.

People in the 3rd world countries baton all the time with their knives. That concept made it here to the states later and many frowned on it. If I can’t baton with my woods knife, it ain’t no good for me.

I’ve been trying to break this BK9 by batoning it for many years now, and have failed miserably.

Some knives are designed for it, and some are even covered by warranty if you manage to bust the knife.
And there is an element of fun to it, which is a valid enough reason to do it with your own knife.

But somehow along the way, it became THE measure of an outdoors knife for many, especially in videos.

I almost cut my my leg off with a glancing blow from my hatchet one year. Cut through my pants and superficially cut my shin.

Now, I can harvest more wood with a folding saw and large knife, than I can with a hatchet. Plus, it’s much safer. I got my wife and kids following the same train of thought now. Saw the log down to sections, and baton them down to kindling.

That's because it wouldn't make for a good video.

Could you imagine if someone made a video, showing people how to make a wedge and hammer, out of wood, with their SAK? Then showed them how to use them and to save your number one survival tool?

Nah! F that noise! I wanna see someone break their blade!

😜

Yeah, I'm not much of a hatchet fan myself.

But I also generally don't split log size chunks with a knife...regardless of some photographic and video evidence to the contrary! :D

So true!
It would take longer than most people's attention span, too...🤔

It's your knife. Do whatever you want.

Agreed, but the question is why it has become so prevalent in videos.

Batoning is fun and useful! 😊 Done correctly it’s an awesome skill to have. Done incorrectly, it’s destructive to your knives. Have fun with your blades!!!!!👍

Pretty sure the knives you make aren't going to be breaking! :)
