I am preparing for a SHTF senario

I realize that my iPhone has a very short battery charge
It will only last a day
So as long as there is uninterupted elecricity or I am in my car, I can recharge

Can you folk suggest a solar charger/storage for recharging an iPhone

Thanks

couple of pics from my hurricane supplies, not necessarily shtf....I've tried to standardize to AAs, so top pic is of AA powered gear, but look at the Goal Zero Guide 10 battery pack...it charges from any USB source in, and USBmini out... Goal Zero 7w solar, 12v to 5v USB, or 120v AC to 5v USB charger on right... my older Motorola flip phone gets only one charge from the Sanyo Eneloop AAs in the Guide 10 pack via USB mini... you may need more current for an iPhone

bottom pic is 12v female battery tap with clips....SCH 808F controller charger, 12v DC or 120v AC... Goal Zero panel

from what I've read, you need the Goal Zero Guide 10 PLUS version to charge an iPhone

I bought a new trent IMP880 a couple years back for about $60

It's pretty small and has a capacity of 8,800 mah. It will recharge my iphone completely 6 times before it needs to be recharged. Definitely something useful to throw in a bag when travelling, if I average 2 charges/day (heavy use) I don't have to see a wall outlet for 3 days.

New Trent has several new models out there now worth looking into, really good reviews on amazon.

I also have a goal zero setup if I'm camping

Guys,
thanks

I am technical so
Could you help me with the Watt output and mA/hr for rechargers
Again for my iPhone

JV3... any idea whether Goal Zero will upgrade a Guide 10 to the PLUS?

the panel & battery pack combo i bought from rei last year and a 2nd battery pack from amazon are already plus so they're out there already...or maybe i'm missing your question?

I have an older Guide 10 battery pack, and from what I've read, you need a "plus" pack to charge an iPhone... I'm in the market for a new phone...

I built a charger for my iphone 4, just a 8 aa battery box from radio shack, 9 volt batt leads, and a female cigarette lighter outlet, plug car charger into it and away it goes. Cost about $10.

If you had something to charge the batteries youd be set.

The iphone4 needs 1000 miliamps. Alot of the older emergency phone chargers say they will charge iphones, but i think the older iphones only took 500 ma to charge

Do you have a picture?

I've been looking at the Voltaic Amp. as a small solar unit (they have a larger one as well) seems to be well built and has some good features from what I can tell. But you only know so much without actually owning one. I did recently get a 5000mAh charge pack for my phone. It seems to do the job well, and my math suggests I can get two and a bit charges from it.

whenever you are looking at chargers and batteries, remember that the rating for "cellphone" (ie charges a cellphone in one hour) has no relation at all to what it will do with a smart phone. Also, since Iphones are more sensitive to power input, be sure to test your phone under different circumstances, and as I'm sure you know, charge it before its totally flat.

Another fun thing you could add to your kit would a wire harness to go from a battery to to your car charger, so if you needed to, you could grab power from any 12v battery, even if its from a car no longer in working order. Might be handy in your area.

here is a pic. its really simple, and is jut a power source for a car charger. so you could charge anything with a car charger cord. and the car charger cord supplied the protection for your device.

as gadgetgeek says, you could even un wire the conectors to the 9 volt connector and wire straight to a car battery.

the 12v female tubular power tap with battery clips (lower left of my bottom picture) came from the marine section of WalMart... heavier duty are found at truck stops...

Didn't see your power tap there Les, good stuff to have. 12v connectors are bulky, but they are very robust as far as dirt and crap go, and much more universal, better than having a funny shaped connecting harness that doesn't fit anything else.
an idea if you need to attach cables to a battery, but don't have clamps or such, you should be able to make a small notch in the lead of the battery post, and embed your wire into it. won't be strong, but it would be better than just wrapping it around. Also if you have a very high heat source, you could just melt the wire into the post. Since we are talking SHTF. I heard of folks in serbia using water wheels to spin alternators to charge batteries or run radios. you need some power to get an alternator to work, but not much.
