So, in receiving my BGFBM, I got to thinking about a.feature of many knives I've seen, and am wondering it's purpose.

What are the large "humps" on the spine for? I see them on numerous knives and can discern no obvious purpose.

I find them to be well-placed as thumb rests on the FBM and Hell Razor. My guess is that and aesthetics.

maybe. ive never slipped off the spine of a knife batoning. not to mention that if im batoning, im most of the time (except when getting it started) hitting the ends of the knife that are sticking out of the log, in this case the clip point and handle areas rather than the center section (where the humps are) which is most of the time buried in the log. im guessing the small hump in the ricasso area is intended as a thumb ramp. i dont know about the rest. weight savings/balance?

Pretty much how I see it. They are too far back to be of any real use while batoning.

For me humps are looking sexy and maybe they are playing role in lateral strength and weight distribution as well. Let's look more closely;)

The amount of metal the humps add will not add strength, maybe a 0.01% increase in lateral stiffness, lol. The blade is already very wide, so strength or stiffness is not an issue. I think the cool looks is what it is all about.

What's the point of having a mistress if you get no humps  ?
Nice! :D At any rate the original FBMLE is a really special Mistress especially when you handle it even though it has a nice hump. Probably the nicest Mistress ever made, well at least that I've owned.

I actually prefer the std version to the LE. Better handling characteristics for me. The original SHBM is still the best ever made. It does everything well and it is not overly large.

I really love the humps! For me is the main purpose the "sexy look". :-)
BTW: I have FBM with aged bronze cerakote finish and it is absolutely stunning!
Now I m awaiting the second beast in SR 101. The addiction has started ;-)
