Just got my first Swamp Rat knife, specifically a battle rat and a rat tail. First off, I'd like to say that these knives are very well crafted and I'm pleased aestetically with them and they came with a fine, well executed edge. I still haven't put them through their paces but I'll hazard a guess that they'll shine when confronted with good, wholesome work.
Now I'm from the school of 'General Usage Items' wherein everything that I buy must be able to do well in more than one or two things. ALL my knives (as well as my firearms) are 'everything' tools and I don't believe in specializing (unless you're some sort of operator; I'm not), especially with knives. I believe that if one has a thin tipped death-ray-Hibben-super-fighter, well, when ya' need some firewood, or help splitting wood, or easily slicing a few veggies, all you have is a lead weight strapped to your side.
I've been doing lots of reading up on the Swampys and I own a project 1, a BK9, BK7 amongst other blades. Folks have said that the BR excels at chopping and that the big knife doesn't have the motion of the BK9 and wouldn't be as good a defense knife as the BK9. Well, my formal opinion on the issue is this: Like heck it won't!
This BR moves VERY nicely and has a superior tip to the BK9. The BK9 is not as tip heavy but I feel because of the slim, ergonomic handle of the BR, that it moves MUCH better than the BK9. The BR is not just some blocky chopper. It definetely is lively in the hand. GREAT tip BTW. Angled way better than the BK9 for thrusting.
Now the BK9 is hands down the best buy for the money of any big knife and that's a fact. period. Great beater and it and the BK7 would be great issue knives for any trying to equip an army, but I've found my new 'everything' knife. Even the choil tells you that this knife is more than a chopper.
-Great work, Swamp Rat.
