Just got my first Swamp Rat knife, specifically a battle rat and a rat tail. First off, I'd like to say that these knives are very well crafted and I'm pleased aestetically with them and they came with a fine, well executed edge. I still haven't put them through their paces but I'll hazard a guess that they'll shine when confronted with good, wholesome work.

Now I'm from the school of 'General Usage Items' wherein everything that I buy must be able to do well in more than one or two things. ALL my knives (as well as my firearms) are 'everything' tools and I don't believe in specializing (unless you're some sort of operator; I'm not), especially with knives. I believe that if one has a thin tipped death-ray-Hibben-super-fighter, well, when ya' need some firewood, or help splitting wood, or easily slicing a few veggies, all you have is a lead weight strapped to your side.

I've been doing lots of reading up on the Swampys and I own a project 1, a BK9, BK7 amongst other blades. Folks have said that the BR excels at chopping and that the big knife doesn't have the motion of the BK9 and wouldn't be as good a defense knife as the BK9. Well, my formal opinion on the issue is this: Like heck it won't!

This BR moves VERY nicely and has a superior tip to the BK9. The BK9 is not as tip heavy but I feel because of the slim, ergonomic handle of the BR, that it moves MUCH better than the BK9. The BR is not just some blocky chopper. It definetely is lively in the hand. GREAT tip BTW. Angled way better than the BK9 for thrusting.

Now the BK9 is hands down the best buy for the money of any big knife and that's a fact. period. Great beater and it and the BK7 would be great issue knives for any trying to equip an army, but I've found my new 'everything' knife. Even the choil tells you that this knife is more than a chopper.

-Great work, Swamp Rat.

Wow! Thanks for coming by (Beat you Eric!)! Now I'm getting quite excited to get my shiny BR. Are they coming soon?

Cheers,
BJB :D

Willy,
Congrats and thanks for stopping by and giving your impressions. Great to hear your comparisons with the BK's.

I hope you stick around and join our discussions

:D:D

I appreciate your warm greetings. I'd like to add that I feel the SR line, or rather what I've seen thus far, gives one greater pride of ownership than many of the very expensive safe queens I used to have. This BR gives me the same pride of ownership that my project 1 gives me and that's saying alot seeing that I have quite a few custom tid-bits added to mine and a superb custom sheath w/ my name engraved on both!

It's the pride of ownership I would assume anyone would get when holding a tool par-excellence-nothing to detract for it's one goal: to perform, completely, fully. Nothing more, and not one millimeter less. That's the kinda' product that makes you feel smart when you buy it; there's never that ounce of guilt at having endulged in something not completely useful.

-Any others believe the BR would make a great all-around, drop-me-off-anywhere-in-the-world knife?

welcome in the nest Willy :D

Once again, one fall in love with his BR...hehehehehe wait a little bit my friend, this blade will speak to you! ;)
I'm a hard believer that the BR is much more than a choper, as you said the choil help for small cutting task. I've used my BR for almost everything I can use a knife for! From serious choping to clean fish with! This blade perform great in all those tasks!
I've tryed to explain the superiority of the BR over the BK9 in severals threads... not saying that the BK9 is bad, it's just not a Battle Rat, not even close too... The funny thing is that everybody who once in their life held a BR, they all want to buy one! and all of my friends who bough one, said that this is the ultimative field or camp or survival knife. Period. :D
For me, even if well used and a bit scrached, my Desert BR is still the Queen of my knives... I can't wait to get my fingers on the Satin BR!!!
Willy, you've just spend the best dollars you could spend in a knife, believe me ;)
