I started a thread on the Busse forum and have thanks to the advice of the chaps, decided at some point to buy a Battle Rat.

Any users stories you want to share with me?

Well, I posted this somewhere before, but over the course of my work I had occasion to use my BR to fell, limb, and skin about 80 feet of 4 inch red pine. Afterwords the coating was a little smoother, but the beast was still sharp. I've been useing that same rat for about two and a half years now, most of that clearing trail and other 'hard' uses which I won't go into now... If you get one it will last you the rest of your life. I'm going to order more SRKW blades in the near future, they are amazing.

out.

I've used a Camp Tramp to cut, hack, chop, break my way through more than any other knife I have (which is a bunch). I'm a fan of 7-8 inch blades max, expecially when I have to carry them, but I'll admit that the Battle Rat would do most of it even better. Comprehensive warranty, made-for-use designs and easy re-sale if you receive it and decide you don't want it. Just do it. :)

If you really want a bunch of pics and stories, you really need to visit the real swamp (Rat Chat).

Go to the Swamp Rat Site (www.swamprat.com) and click on Rat Chat. When it comes up, add it to your favorites. Then register and join in.

Funny thing is, most of the Busse fanactics (me included) hang out on the BF Busse site rather than the 'official' Busse Combat site. The exact opposite is true of the BF SwampRat site and the 'Swamp'. Go figure! One of lifes little mysteries I guess.

Anyway, check it out and get that Battle Rat, you'll be glad you did. I've had mine going on 3 years and still love it.

Have Fun!

Rob

I got a great bargain on a Battle Rat about a year ago. It was used and the coating had been stripped. I threw it in the truck to serve as a truck knife. Since I am pretty well tied down with an invalid daughter, I had no chance to use it until the past summer when I was clearing some saplings and large privet from the back of my lot. I had done no sharpening at all. I chopped down two truck loads of saplings and brush. I trimmed the limbs for more efficient packing of the truck (anyone who has ever cut privet knows what I am talking about here.) When I finished the knife was covered with sap. I put it back in the truck. I took it out a few weeks ago to clean it up. Out of curiosity I swiped it down my forearm and the dang thing would still easily shave arm hair! I was astonished.

This one will never be sold. My heirs will have to figure out what to do with it.

Combat Grade? In new, unused condition, maybe.

Some used ones went not too long ago for significantly less. However, it seems to me that the Busse resales have picked up a good bit lately in volume and price after somewhat of a slump in prices. Lots of new hogs coming into the market.

If you want one, buy it. A better deal may come along tomorrow, or you might not see another one for sale for months. That's the way (and the fun) of the resale market.

I totally agree with Mike. I have both (BM, BR) and I'd still suggest getting the BR first. I also think if you're patient you can find a good deal on a BM-E, but get the BR first. Makes you appreciate both, more.

I just got one Satin BR from Jody. Haven't got the opportunity to field test yet, though.

The first pic is when it arrived:

A little more comfy in the hand than the Basic 9, IMHO. (I also prefer satin to the black-coated.)

The second taken after taking the shower, cleaning and removing all the stain:

Someone I know is selling a BM-E for about $400... Should I?

Too high, I think.
I've found one, used just a little and come with Leatherman sheath for a lot less.
Hope this help.

I haven't had the chance to use my BR as much as I would like to. I've done some chopping, and it is very good. Mine don't stay sharp as long as some of the other posters, but it stays sharp more than long enough. The only complaint from me is that the handle is a little bit too thin, and that causes some discomfort on full power swings. Gloves should solve this problem, others really like the handles, so YMMV.

At the risking of getting rooted out by hogs, I think the BR chops better than the BM E. The BM, because of the full tang construction, is a little more neutrally balanced than the BR. I can't get as much momentum/force as I can with the BR. Not that I don't like the BM, I do, very much. For me, it's more of an all purpose knife than camp knife, although it will do both just fine.

Hope that helps.

Hi knifecoop,

You may want to check the dates -- this thread is over a year old.

Holy Cow! Had me for a sec there, I thought the General had changed his ways. :p:eek:

The Battle Rat is the best knife you are going to use!:D
Soft Res-c handle absorbs shock from hacking and is non slip, VERY durable!
