Hey Guys,

New to the forum and new to Swamp Rats.

Im looking to purchase a used Battle Rat.

Whats one worth to buy used if in good shape?

Also, any commentary on the the knife itself would be appreciated.

Can anybody weigh in on the differentially heated Battle Rats vs the through heated Battle Rat?

DHT will flex more before breakage than a through hardened blade will. However if you do manage to break a Battle Rat you are a hell of guy.

Coated will have better corrosion resistance but satin will cut better due to less friction.

Okay one more.

Thoughts on the Battle rat vs the sykco 911. What would you rather own?
Assuming both are black finish , through heated, mint condition, never used and the same price.

Please detail why if possible.

Never had a Battle Rat or a 911, but for your wieving pleasure, i am posting a cpl. of pics of my Busse Basic-9 (with the Swamp Rat M9), which in size is quite similar to the Rat and 911. Basic-9 works as good as the M9; both are darn good knives/choppers...

Enjoy :)

I would choose a Battle Rat over 911 , mostly because the choil on BR is rounded and not squared like the 911.

I would choose a Battle Rat over a 911 because it sounds sexier! ;)

Seriously, trying to decide between a Battle Rat and a 911 is like splitting hairs. All other things being equal, get the one that's cheaper. And don't worry about differential tempering versus through tempering. If you can put enough lateral force on a 911 to make it bend the blade permanently or break it, you're a better man than I, Gunga Din.

Thanks for the input, gents. I'm going with the Battle Rat; Tan handle, black finish.

Thanks also from me. Curious on these models. So many Bussekins have near identical specs. I did recently purchase an SR Dog Father. Would rather have a rounded choil, but rest of package suits me well. Found that 16 - 17 ounce blades easier to handle with my older, skinny arms...;-)

Had on of those, once - The DF is made from SR-77 and has a thicker blade than the 911/Battle Rat/Basic-9. -SYKCO 911 and Battle Rat is made from SR-101, Basic-9 from Modified-Infi.

Enjoy your Dog Father - thats one tough chopper that you got there:thumbup:

Great choice! :D

This was a dead and hard pine and was God awful to drop...only damage I've ever done to my BR and these were micro dings that sharpened right out. Could still cut paper before sharpening though. Add- this is with a thinned out edge.

Thanks ragnerok. I find I like that DFLE more than I thought I would. After being dazzled by Busse's, (I own 18), I'm starting to notice the Rats and Dogs. Always need more great place's to put my money...;-)

Yeah man - have Busses, Rats and Dogs, mostly Busse, but Dogs and Rats rock, too - lots of value for the money..

Arguably the BEST Busse Kin blade ever released! To tell you how much I like it, I traded a NMFBM straight across for my Tan/Tan Battle Rat and feel I got the better knife! In a worst case scenario, I REALLY like my B10's and think I might grab one over the BR if I could only take one (simply for the corrosion resistance), but if I didn't have either of my 10's, there would be NO QUESTION which of my kin would reign over the rest (especially since it's now been convexed by NorCalBlacktail)! My Tan/Tan Battle Rat (now camo) and I have had some good times...

It's sabre grind blade made short work of our wedding cake (that chocolate 45-70 cartridge didn't stand a chance)...

It's been to Africa on Safari with me where I used it to kill a Wildebeest (funny story actually) (paired here with a custom Vex that also made the trip)...

And now it lives in a pack close to new friends...(Man if only the B10's looked that good)

Now that I've reminisced about some of the highlights in my life it's been a part of, the B10's could VERY easily be overlooked and I could happily grab that BATTLE RAT simply for sentimental reasons.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND GETTING ONE IF YOU CAN!!!

and

Take note of RPN's sheaths above... Mine currently lives in Kydex and Nylon, but I've been wanting to get a Sierra's Custom Sheath ever since I saw his... they look like a PERFECT match! (OOPS, just realized RPN didn't post one of his pics...maybe he'll add one with his sheath so you can see how awesome the package is... hint hint)

Heck, I'm gonna go get it out right now and pretend we're back in Africa and I just might have to call Sierra tomorrow.

Good Luck in your Quest!!!
