I know the ka-bar is not the strongest fixed blade for battoning, however I only batton softer woods (willow mostly) for fire boards usually less than 3 inches thick. will my MK1 handle it? I do not want to ruin my blade. Thanks for any info:)

Its the rattail tang that is the weak part not necessarily the strength of the blade. However ive seen plenty of kabar usmcs batoned without a problem. Plus kabar is great with their warranty and im pretty sure as long as your not prying open a bench vise with it, a broken blade will be replaced

From a factory perspective, I will say batonning any knife is abuse.

That said, I do it to all of mine, my MKI included. :D

It will take it, IMO, so have fun. Be sure and practice good technique, and try to alleviate as much pressure at the handle junction as you can. Don't bite off more than it can chew, but yeah, I'm pretty sure it can take it. As a matter of fact, I know it can.

It's the conjunction between the blade and the tang that's the problem IMO. Two right angles, mirror of each other, two identical stress points. Just be a little careful, you should be fine.

My concern w/ the Mk1 would be puttin' a wiggle in the edge. It's a long way across the blade until it thickens up significantly.

The Short KA-BAR, on the other hand, gets thick pretty quick. I have no blade concerns w/ it RE: battonin' what's-so-ever.

My $0.02...

Good points. There shouldn't be any problems, Ka-Bar's HT is awesome, but it could happen (and will if you're not careful)
