so, can they handle it ?
anyone did this ?
I am well aware that for battoning a fixed blade is the weapon of choice, however, i do not own a fixed blade at the moment. i know you can pick one up for like 30$, but i'm not like that, either i buy premium quality either I dont buy at all.

Don't know why you'd ever want to...

I have seen battoning of XMs and other knives on YT, but usually out of caution (and without justified cause) the lock is disengaged. So all force is on the blade. Plus, we're not talking about splitting very large logs either.

Btw...knives are no more a "weapon" than a hammer, rock or stick....they are tools.

I have battoned with every thing from a Becker BK2 to a Vic Farmer. I think it depends on expecting a reasonable outcome. I was basically making splinters with the Vic. Also, I agree with N2K, my brain is the weapon, every thing else is a tool (or lunch).

There's no reason not to batton a knife that is made to handle it. I would only batton a folder if I had no other choice but I don't have very mamy folders. I have one that I wouldn't take a chance with but my CS AK-47 I might, but only if I had to, and it would be something small.

I do use my hinderers alot. But I have never battoned with one and I don't plan on it. I'm sure that it could handle it without an issue, but I prefer using a fixed blade beater for that type of work. I have an old Vietnam era usmc kabar I use for camp chores. But my xm-24 is right there watching and hoping that I will give him a turn. Once I get my grail fieldtac I won't hesitate to batton with a hinderer.

I know a knife is a tool, i called it for the expression "weapon of choice"...

Had those little quotation marks been there in the first place I wound't a said a thing.

For battoning, I grab the fixed blade knife that I brought along beforehand. It's would be odd to go into a senerio calling for battoning of materials and not have a more proper tool for the task along with you (aside from a test/experiment of some sort). I'm trying to avoid that Dooms Day type conversation.

I was obvious to me in the context of your sentence. Battoning with a folder is a bad idea unless it is a last resort. Use a fixed blade and avoid the opportunity of ruining a folder and its lock.

It was obvious to most, but to clarify terms I was just suggesting uhm...clarity. Far better than assumption, me thinks?:)

And RDA and others are right...fixed blade for battoning.

Will a Hinderer folder batton wood? Of course!!! But why one would want (notice I said "want") to is not easy for me to understand.

N2K, you should know i do not regard knives as weapons since when I ordered my xm-24 I was ranting here because the post guys wouldn't ship it because it was a "weapon". and I believe you did reply to that :p if i remember correctly though!
And i know a fixed blade would perform better, but would there be damage to the lock by battoning? not saying I will, not saying I want, just simple curiosity!

Without editorializing on the "better" options - Your answer is;

IF the situation arose where you had to baton with your XM - DO NOT lock your blade in the open position (let it remain free moving)
Obviously hold the handle, position the blade on the material and do what you have to do.

Hopefully this answers the question about Batoning with an XM.

None of the knife loving group think of them as anything other than a tool. Politicians and "others" see differently on this and so many other things. There, done!

Can an XM baton wood? Damn skippy! Will I ever? Not likely. Should someone else?: I advise against it, but ultimately what you do with your tools...
