Hello everyone. I received this sword from my grandpa when he passed away and I was wondering if it is in fact a Bavarian Officer's sword like I was told. It says "In Treue Fest" on the blade. Any idea how old it is? Any info is appreciated. Is this type of thing valuable? I don't plan on selling it, but I'm thinking about getting it insured if it's of decent value. Thanks in advance!

The motto was used in more states of Germany than just Bavaria. These degen range from rather mundane to precious and this one probably somewhere in between the two. The overall type quite common and used for more than a century. This one likely early 19th century prior to WWI but these aren't really my scope of understanding. Bavarian would make sense, with that counterguard's crown (Ludwig III mebbe).

Cheers

GC

""In Treue fest" (Firm in fidelity) was the motto of the Bavarian Army until 1918 and the Bavarian order of St. Hubertus.

It was also the motto or royalists advocating the restoration of the Bavarian monarchy between 1918 and the near-total control of the Nazis in the late 1030's.

From Bladeforums rules:

WHAT IS MY KNIFE / GADGET / SPATULA / TUNING FORK WORTH ?!?!?!?!

In order to curtail potential abuse of membership privileges associated with the forums, questions regarding valuation of knives and collections are limited to those with a membership level which permits selling on this site. Accordingly, registered and basic members may not start or post in threads with such requests whether with the intent to sell or for informational purposes only. This rule applies throughout the site.

In other words, without a paid Gold membership, you don't get to ask about sale values. Too many people abused this question to hint they had a knife for sale, which you need that membership for.
