My long time faithful pal and companion Odie the Wonder Dog (Beagle) just crossed the river.
Been in a bad way for the last several months. Found she was diabetic, careful diet and insulin twice a day but didn't last long.

Just a dog but kind of a kick in the gut when you get attached to em.

Had a vet coming this afternoon to put her down but she just passed on her own. My youngest son was able to get home from work before she went so he and the wife were able to comfort.

Guess we'll meet again on the other side.

Place is like family here, felt the need to share.

How odd, last night I was in some pretty bad pain after fighting with the snow and had a pretty disturbing dream about working at the shelter again. I have not had a dream about that place in years. While I used to love parts of that job, there were other parts that I despised and have left lasting impression on me to this day.

Condolences from our family to you and yours my friend.
Smoke and prayer to you, and for odies star journey.
Please keep her in your heart.

I am crying with you.

There is a nice place on the internet that was immensely helpful to me in my times of grief. We have had to put down or bury several animals over the last few years due to old age. I have created "tribute" pages on this site for them and spent quite a bit of time there off and on to read the poetry and interact in their chatroom. The site is Petloss.com

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

There is no such thing as "just a dog"

love dogs, seen many pass, oldest ritual shared by all things, glad you had the time you did, as with all others

Sorry about the loss, in a big way. We had an old dog leave us about two months ago, similarly went on her own without a vet, which was a blessing despite our heartache. We can count our blessings, but it still hurts! A big blessing is all the memories left behind.

Its never easy to loose a loved one my friend, seems to get harder the older we get though. I feel your pain and were here if ya need.

Your thread just made me appreciate my day with my old Golden that often needs my help.

Sorry to hear, Bawanna. I think losing a dog hits harder than losing people sometimes-dogs give you everything they've got, every day. The hole they leave in your life is enormous. Hunt free, Odie.

I don't know any words to cheer you up, but I will say that looks like a handsome, honest dog.

I'm so sorry. We have a beagle that's getting up there in years. My wife and I know that his time will come, but we're concerned about how it will go for our kids. They are 7 and 9 and have never known life without him.

Condolences on your loss.

Sorry for your loss, it's amazing how these furry little things can touch us so deeply.

Smoke up fella! Sorry for your loss bawanna. Im hurtin with ya for every one ive lost too. Freekin hard and it never ends. I always feel like there is something more you could have done for them while they are there giving you unconditional love no matter how crappy you feel, no matter how good you feel, no matter what! They are always there for you. You can never fill that emptiness when they are gone. It takes a special person to give a good life to these guys. Im with ya my friend! Im always in the dog house with my friends.

I have lost a lot of dogs in my lifetime. I must admit there were a couple that I wasn't so sad to see go. Many were a terrible loss and ripped my heart out but there have been a couple I will never never get over. In all cases - even though it means more future pain- a puppy was the salve to soothe my aching soul.

Very sorry for your loss. It is always a hard thing to go through. Always think about the good times that you had with Odie and that he loved you more than anything. Think of the great life that you gave him. There will come a time when you are ready for another dog, or when a dog that needs you finds you. And then you can tell him all of the Odie stories and continue his memory.

I've cried more over having to put down one of my dogs than some of my relatives. People can be rat bastards, dogs are loyal to a fault and fill your heart. Sorry to hear about your loss.
