Bayonet help

A friend at work brought in a bayonet. He knows I like knives so he asked me to identify it. Way beyond me. Heres the details. From tip to guard 20.5 in. from guard to end of handle 4.5 in..the spine has what I believe to be french engraving. Very faint, the guard has 61942 stamped in it. There are several letters stamped in circles and diamond shapes. I took pics. I can not figure how to post from phone. Anyone have any ideas on where to find an age on this thing?

Its tough to give any answers on this without seeing it. You may want to try posting this in the Bernie Levine forum here. There is a bayonet ID book around, but I don't remember the name of it. I would bet Bernie or somebody poking around that forum has it.
