So whats the deal with bayonets, are they worth spitting at?? I've wanted an M16 bayonet for a long time but never got around to getting one. I'd cut off the barrel ring and some how smooth that over and just use it as a work knife. They are a bit long, but I prefer a longer blade. I just want something in my truck that I don't mind getting banged up.

But whats all of yalls opinions on bayonets? Are they good knife pieces or are they just as cheap as the next TV knife???

Bayonets are primarily a thrusting weapon..Not really much good as a knife but will do the job if youve got nothing else. There are better options........FES

I obtained a "liberated" M16 bayonet (I didn't do the liberating) from a fellow co-worker overseas in 1975.
I carried it a bit in the wilds for a couple years on getting out of the service just because I didn't have the money to get anything else.

Poor field knife in general, lousy hunter/skinner.
I can't see any sense in deliberately getting one to modify for a general purpose working knife.

If you like that blade configuration & just want a beater, you might try a Glock knife. Same basic blade style, $30, and it's a genuine beater as it comes.
Won't hold an edge particularly long, but very easy to sharpen, tough blade, can bend & be bent back without breaking, and you really don't care if you scratch & dent it.

Using a bayonet because it's all you have is one thing, deliberately buying one to use as a beater is another.

AK bayonet isnt bad at all, wire cutter, saw, full tang and a good steel, got my dad one since he served in GDR,he likes it :D

I beat the piss out of a Glock knife for one of the Glock Annual magazines a while back.
Ordinarily I wouldn't even consider using that type of blade configuration for carry, but I had to admit it took the beating pretty well, IF you like the blade style. :)
Wouldn't make a bad kick-around truck knife, for some uses.

Ostdeutschland! Yeah my father served in old commie Romania and had an AK bayo aswell. Best of the AK bayos were infact the east German ones, followed by Romania's.
I've got a Polish one in my collection which isn't too bad either. I actually bought it for my father, but he doesn't like it because it's not like the one he was issued in the army(he was issued the one with the old round type 1 handle, while I accidentally bought the type 2).

The M9 bayo is a joke. The tang is necked down to 1/4" and threaded. As far as tangs go, it's the worst design ever. Your much better off with an ESEE-4 or -6.

Bayonets can be very interesting. Their history runs about 300 years and just about every possible variation of cutlery has been mounted at the end of a rifle, shotgun or musket. The entire ages old thrust vs. cut debate played itself out again within a compressed span of time. Look closely and you will find fighting knives, bowies, shovels, sawbacks, bolos, yatagans, daggers, hunting swords, spikes, kukries, ...and more. You just have to pick the right one. Clearly an M3 fighting knife/M-16 bayonet style blade would make for a poor hunting knife; something like the Spanish Cetme bayonet would be better.
