We all know that Bura previously swung the heavy hammer with the best of them... Since his illness and recuperation period, he reportedly is leaving that chore to an apprentice... Many persons are forced to decrease their physical exertions due to illness. Some artisans may even lose a bodily function, such as sight. Oftentimes these very limitations are compensated by the enhancement of their creativity, and genius of their work...

Has anyone observed the differences of Bura's best work (the knives in which he is rewarded a bonus by Pala) before and after his hospitalisation and subsequent recovery?

Thank you for your observations... Dan :)

The only thing I noticed was the size of his mark got smaller before the stroke. I think the size change back to it's original mark after that. But it's the time they switched to the initials instead of the symbols.

I am hardly an expert on Khuks, but when I hold my 18 inch Bura WW2 I honestly can not believe there is a better blade in eistance anywhere! Equal maybe, but none better.

He took on helpers after his stroke -- I think that's the difference we see. Before he did everything himself. After the stroke he had to play boss and coach and let others do some of the dirty work.

non scientific, but purely from photos and people's descriptions, as well as a three khuks I've handled, one pre and two post stroke. I'm guessing the real difference was more notable shortly after he resumed work. A 15" AK I gave as a gift had some wavers in the metal. The movie model I got last summer at the same time was near perfect.

He seems to have come back. I'm not sure if we can honestly tell the difference any longer. That's one thing I unconsciously checked for when I started reading here again. Didn't know it until this thread. Listen to all the compliments. Bill's descriptions. Reports from the field. I think he's back.

It would also make sense that if he took on a crew after his return that there would at least some period of time training the new crew, during which things might not have been quite up to his standards. It is, in fact, a testimony to Bura's skills and drive to have gotten them trained and back up to standards as quickly as he did.

Knowing that there is a significant "blem" market here, it probably wasn't a big deal as opposed to trying to make each 100%. After all, logs don't complain about a slight imperfections and Uncle Bill has always been very generous in classifying blems!

To me Bura is the best. If anything I think he is trying even harder after his stroke to not let quality slip in work he puts his name on.

But sometimes it happens. It doesn't worry me.

Bruise... I'm happy it's such a minor detail that's been seen. :)

StmmZaum... I'm glad you found a keep with your Bura WWII; sounds like a keeper.

Uncle Bill... From what I read, you, the staff at BirGhorka and the forumites came to Bura's side in his time of need. This is really wonderful, and help was not offered just to get an employee back on the job. It was kind of like family pitching in...that's just a part of the HIKV. :D

Munk... Your input from others, gleaning data from photos and having had handled three of Bura's creations is all the science I need. I'm very happy with the news that Bura is is back in force :) I suspected he was, but wanted to get some definitive answers, and I did...

Nasty... Sure, I understand that there was a certain transition period. It's inevitable, and I glad he was able to come back to previous standards so quickly. I'm sure he felt it was his duty to get the shop working well again despite his fragility.

Semper Fi... Bura is my favorite too, even though all are masters of their craft. If I had to choose one right now, I'd most likely go for a Bura khukuri.

I was hoping to hear of some of the artistic improvements too; maybe they'll be forthcoming in this thread... Anyway, I wish Bura many more productive years at BirGhorka, and a long and happy life. I'm very pleased he's back, and producing amazing blades once more :)

Dan :D
