Now , now , don't say mean things about the DM. In part it's my morning humour to start the day !
In my reading of people who cook and heat inside by open fires , they have always had eye problems from the smoke ! Some of their homes are better than others ,providing better air flow to take out the smoke .
 
It's just reverting to old, tried and true cooking. After all the "improvements " wood stoves , coal, gas , electric ,infra-red, induction and super duper stainless steel stoves ,some have realized that the old ways still work fine !!! Cooking over hot coals , wrapping food in mud, clay, burying the food with fire on top , all have benefits !!
