BC Crew hike + what i did wrong today

The BC Wrecking Crew met up today in North Van BC for a quick hike. Switchblade, Munky88, 6Shooter and myself all somehow managed to persuede ourselves to go hiking in 3 deg celcuis temps, with over 100PLUS mm of rain falling. :D

We headed out down the trail, torrential ran falling and soaking us. Creeks were overflowing, the trail was soaked, everything was soaked. Something as simple as brushing a branch aside resulted in a liter of water soaking you.

we found a spot to set up for a photo shoot and 6Shooter + Switchblade set up a tarp. What a difference a simple tarpmakes when its pissing out.

It was cold! my extremities were getting numb (normal for me, no body fat), even with woolies on i had limited finger mobility. Pack contents were soaked right thru, a river dunk would been drier.......lol. Thank god for Pelican cases and sealed Aloksaks for my gear.

Broke out the nato brew kit and set it up for a hot tea. I use a Pelican 1010 case for the esbit tabs. Even though my pack was soaked thru my essential gear way protected and dry. Hunched over as i lit them they were getting wet from water running (not dripping, running) of my hat. Tossed in a few extra so i could warm my hands. Brewed a cuppa of "iced" tea mix. Hot, Sugary, sweeeeeeet and HOT! God that was the best cup of tea i've had ever.

We did a knife pass around, Switchblade has some VERY nice customs from Eastern europe. Took photos and then we played around with fatwood shavings and firesteels. We did get a teeny fire going , despite the rain.

Things i did wrong:

- no wool sweater, i wore fleece under my smock, despite that fact that it has never worked for me in BC's wet weather. Normally i will wear a wool sweater, next to my skin and i heat up like a nuclear reactor, even in pissing rain. Nope, today i wore fleece......... bad fleece.....fleece is bad ...BOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

- no rain pants. There they were, sitting by the door before i left. There they are still, OOPS!

- light breakfast.........i only had a breakfast wrap before i headed out. Normally i'll eat good ol rib sticking food with lots of fat in it before a hike. Then during the hike i have internal energy and heat. OOPS!

- no wool toque. Instead i had my city beanie hat, NOT warm enough when wet like my itchy wool hat is. OOPS!

all in all GREAT DAY despite the horrendous rain and cold temps and sleet. Got to meet a new member (Switchblade! great to meet you Sir!). Got to hike witht he BC Crew, and got to see some knife loot! the only thing DRY on me when i got home was my feet. My wool socks and army boots were bone dry inside, despite the rain and slosing thru deep puddles. Yay Obenuafs boot treatment!

the rest of the BC crew will chime in here.

"The BC Wrecking Crew"......I like that:D

Thanks again Bushman for driving me, and for the Norse Hawk and Mora:thumbup: Much appreciated bro.

Yeah, it was pissing. And cold. There was slush on the ground in some spots, I'm definitely glad we didn't end up setting up at that spot by the river, I reckon it woulda been a fair bit colder out in the open by the water.

On the knife front, Munky had some blades he made that were awesome. And holy smokes, the customs from Hungary that Switchblade had were amazing. I do believe either Munky or Switchblade has a couple pics, I think we had a decent number between the 4 of us.

It was a good time, I definitely dig these get togethers, but I like it more when the weather co-operates:rolleyes:. I think we're building up a pretty decent sized crew around here, I like it:cool:

hey your welcome 6shot, enjoy the hawk and Mora.

I too prefer better weather, but hey, like i was saying when we were all wet and shivering, could be worse...... :D we could be doing a 3 day army basic training patrol, and be yelled at to strip our weapons with numb fingers and reassemble them after three days of pissing rain and cold......LMAO! (big shout out to the CDN Forces recruits btw! )

Pictures will be uploaded soon. Haven't gotten them yet.

When I got home I was surprised that no water had actually made it threw my jacket, with the exception of around the hands, and middle of the chest because I didn't have it fully zipped in the beginning. Didn't bead off at all, I'm washing it now and hoping that will help a bit. I guess I was just losing heat to the water ontop of the jacket, which weighs about 3 pounds more than it should right now.

I was wearing 5.11 taclight pants which in the rain utterly failed. They're ussualy good with getting wet and drying quickly and also repelling smaller amounts of water. Today they just got completely drenched within about 15 minutes I would have been better off wearing shorts. Seriously.

I should have been wearing a better base layer, gloves, and extra gloves, and a hat. The jacket has a hood but it drives me crazy because it restricts vision and I cant turn my head.

We didn't really do a whole lot of outdoor skills today on account of freezing and being huddled up under a tarp. But Switchblade had brought some cool fire starting things. Fatwood, and some sawdust and wax in an egg carton dome that burned hot for a solid 15 minutes.

Didn't get too many pictures today, just a little group shot and pictures of knives. Natural order will be restored in short order, I'll have bushman's camera fixed soon. I'm thinking I'll just mount a plate on the bottom with a wingnut that will hold everything in. or wrap the whole damn thing in kydex!

wait, you didn;t get wet? you looked soaked man! I was getting worried for a while there......

it must be your northern euro roots.......you were bareheaded in sub 3 degee temps and pissing rain........LOL

Oh I was soaked but aside from the hands and chest area, which were my fault, the only water that made it threw my jacket from the outside was water that had wicked up my pants to my fleece. Though i was still losing heat from the water trapped in the jacket.

This is just a basic worn down Mountain Hardware hardshell.

So yeah, I was a little chilly, but I just need a hat, better mid layer, zip it up completely and of course wear rain pants and it should be perfect. I usually use this jacket for snowboarding and skiing, so this is the first time I've really used it in heavy prolonged rain. A learning experience.

I hear ya buddy, you can have the most expensive fleece form Mountain Hardwear etc but they still don't compare to wool when the weather turns nasty eh !!!!

Sounds like a great time, but pictures are needed!! I love going out in the rain.

This thread is nothing without the pics! (I shouldn't say that, as I haven't a camera)

Sounds like a nasty, but fun time

Sounds like a good time, I vote for some pics of you guys wet and cold as well;)

I had a good time today, as well. I am glad to be part of "The BC Wrecking Crew". :)
My boots, socks, pants, backpack got soaking wet and toward the end of the get together I started to get cold, too. Munky, you really looked drenched...
I'll try to put some pictures up here, since Munky did not received them... Finally, I figured it out!

Some more photos...
I did not make more because of the pissing rain and all. Tried to save the camera from getting soaked. You can see the water on the blades and this was pretty much under the tarp...

Hey you got it! I like to use http://imageshack.us/ as the host, because it lets you upload multiple files and re-size them at the same time.

Just got home and got the emails now. Here are a few closeups of the knives.
